Espoo-based quantum-algorithm developer QMill and Montréal’s ÉTS have formalized a strategic research partnership that brings together QMill’s industrial expertise in near-term quantum software and ÉTS’s growing academic strength in quantum-algorithm science. The collaboration will focus on co-developing, testing, and benchmarking algorithms designed for real-world use cases—particularly in sectors such as energy, logistics, and telecommunications—while enabling shared research projects, talent exchanges, and direct technology-transfer channels. By linking Finland’s advanced quantum-computing community with Québec’s fast-rising quantum ecosystem, the two organizations aim to accelerate the path from theoretical breakthroughs to practical quantum impact.
QMill is a Finnish company focused on developing quantum algorithms and software for near-term hardware. Founded in 2024 and based in Espoo, it works on applied approaches to quantum computation, with an emphasis on optimization problems relevant to industry.
“ÉTS is a strong academic partner for QMill, offering new ideas and talent to help us advance practical quantum algorithms. Canada’s investment in quantum computing infrastructure gives us the perfect environment to test these solutions, and with industries like energy, logistics, and telecommunications leading the way, we see compelling use cases and partnership opportunities to bring quantum innovation into real-world applications,” said Dr. Hannu Kauppinen, CEO and Co-Founder of QMill.
ÉTS is a Montréal-based public engineering school specializing in applied research and practice-oriented engineering education. It maintains close collaboration with industry through cooperative education models and conducts a significant share of its research in partnership with companies in Québec, Canada, and internationally.
“This agreement highlights ÉTS’s commitment to quantum-algorithm research in Québec. We are building an internationally recognized program that unites academic precision with real-world relevance. QMill’s team, bringing together top-tier scientists and industrial leaders, adds a powerful dimension to our efforts. Together, we are shaping how quantum algorithms will be designed, tested, and implemented, right here in downtown Montréal,” said Christian Casanova, Vice-President of Research and Partnerships at ÉTS.
The Institute in Quantum Science and Engineering at ÉTS is a research unit established to advance quantum-algorithm development and foster collaboration between academia, government, and industry across Québec and beyond.
“I am looking forward to this cooperation which allows us to combine our strengths to push quantum computing to its limits,” commented Prof. Jacob Biamonte, Director of the new Institute in Quantum Science and Engineering at ÉTS.
Through its newly created Institute in Quantum Science and Engineering, ÉTS offers an environment where scientific excellence meets the engineering mindset. The collaboration will enable shared projects, researcher exchanges, and direct channels for technology and knowledge transfer.
The partnership was initially announced during the July 2025 launch of the new institute ÉTS is building to focus on quantum science and engineering. The terms were finalized during the recent visit of QMill’s leadership to Montréal, marking a new chapter in quantum-algorithm research collaboration between Finland and Québec. The collaboration underscores how Finland’s established quantum-computing community and Québec’s quantum ecosystem can work together to build a global innovation corridor.
