Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised Nala Renewables Limited (Nala Renewables) on both the acquisition and project financing of a 50 MW ready-to-build Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Kauhava, Finland.
White & Case represented Nala Renewables on its acquisition of the BESS project from Fu-Gen AG, a Swiss-based renewables developer and independent power producer. The acquisition was successfully completed earlier this year, marking a significant step in Nala Renewables’ presence in the European energy market.
“This transaction demonstrates our commitment to supporting the energy transition in Finland and across the Nordics,” said Timo Airisto, White & Case partner who led the acquisition deal. “We are proud to have assisted Nala Renewables in securing this important asset, which will contribute to the growth of their BESS portfolio and the broader adoption of renewable energy solutions.”
Following the acquisition, White & Case also advised Nala Renewables on the project financing for the development of the BESS project. The financing will support the construction of the 50MW / 100MWh BESS, which has already commenced, and further accelerate Nala Renewables’ growth plans in Finland.
“This financing is key to supporting the build out of Nala Renewables’ BESS portfolio in Finland,” said White & Case partner Carina Radford, who led the Firm’s deal team. “This project is another example of the leading role White & Case is playing in the European energy transition story.”
In addition to the acquisition and project financing, White & Case also advised Nala Renewables on trading solutions and construction contracts in connection with the project.
Nala is a joint venture between Trafigura and funds managed by IFM Investors.
The White & Case team advising on the financing transaction was led by partner Carina Radford (London) and included partners Caroline Miller Smith and Paddy Mohen (both London), Timo Airisto, Tanja Tornkvist and Oona Lilja (all Helsinki), associates Miles Tonkin, Jake Seal, Emily Cameron and Bethanie Abrahams (all London) and Jasmin Piippo (Helsinki).
The earlier acquisition was led by partner Timo Airisto and included partners Tanja Törnkvist, Oona Lilja, associates Satu Lindvall, Pauliina Heikkonen and Asmo Esser (all Helsinki).
