AI chip startup Groq has deployed its AI infrastructure in an Equinix data center in Sydney, Australia.
According to the company, this is its first deployment in Asia Pacific and is part of its ongoing global expansion.
The deployment utilizes 4.5MW of capacity at the facility and uses Equinix Fabric for interconnection services. Customers in the Asia Pacific region will now be able to use Groq’s inference capabilities via GroqCloud with reduced latency. According to the company, around half of its two million users are based in Asia Pacific.
Jonathan Ross, CEO and founder, Groq, said: “The world doesn’t have enough compute for everyone to build AI. That’s why Groq and Equinix are expanding access, starting in Australia.”
Cyrus Adaggra, president, Asia-Pacific, Equinix, added: “Groq is a pioneer in AI inference, and we’re delighted they’re rapidly scaling their high-performance infrastructure globally through Equinix. Our unique ecosystems and wide global footprint continue to serve as a connectivity gateway to their customers and enable efficient enterprise AI workflows at scale.”
Equinix operates eight data centers in Sydney, Australia, including one “xScale” facility. It has not been stated which data center Groq is leasing space in.
Groq was co-founded in 2016 by Ross, who previously helped lead Google’s Tensor Processing Unit development. The company provides dedicated chips and accelerators within its own servers and racks designed for artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance computing.
The company is also a customer of Equinix in Helsinki, Finland, having leased space there earlier this year. Elsewhere, the company has a presence in the US (Equinix, TierPoint, and DataBank), Canada (Bell Canada), and Saudi Arabia (Humain). In October 2025, Groq’s CEO said that the company had set up 12 data centers to date, and aimed to establish another 12 in 2026. Ross cited a specific interest in establishing data centers in Asia.
In February 2025, Groq secured $1.5 billion in investment from Saudi Arabia to expand AI inference infrastructure in the country.
