Another large data center campus has been proposed in Finland.
The government of Hämeenlinna this week announced that a reservation agreement has been made for three business plots in Hämeenlinna’s MORE industrial park for a data center project.
The reservation covers a total of 149,795 sqm (1.61 million sq ft) and enables the construction of a data center with a maximum capacity of 120MW.
The potential buyer is described as a “Nordic ownership group,” which aims to develop a sustainable, renewable energy data center complex and find a suitable operator for it.
The ownership group includes Tor Arne Pedersen, chairman of the board at Northern Europe Energy Group and chairman of the board at Varanger Kraft AS – and listed in the release as board member of Baltic General Power Company SIA (BGPC).
“Our goal is to ensure that a modern data center is built in Hämeenlinna, utilizing clean energy and advanced heat recovery solutions. We are currently looking for an internationally experienced operator who shares these goals,” Pedersen said.
The Latvian Baltic General Power Company SIA (BGPC) is described as an “early-stage company with expertise in real estate development, hydrogen projects, and European energy connections.”
An operator that will take responsibility for running the data center is currently being sought, and the city of Hämeenlinna will conduct a due diligence check before approving the chosen company.
Other members of the ownership group include Jacob B. Stolt-Nielsen, founder of Norterminal AS and Narvik Batter; and real estate developer Rune Ulvang.
“The project strengthens Hämeenlinna’s position as a hub for sustainable industry and digital infrastructure. In cooperation with the owners and the future operator, we can bring investments, jobs, and expertise to the area – responsibly and while strengthening local vitality,” added Ari Räsänen, director, location services at Linnan Kehitys Oy, Hämeenlinna’s business development company.
Hämeenlinna is a city in Finland and the regional capital of Kanta-Häme, some 100km north of Helsinki. The 700 hectare MORE park was born out of the merging of two existing industrial parks – Moreeni in Hämeenlinna and Rastikangas in Janakkala. Construction and development of both sites began around the year 2000, combining under the new name in 2020.
Most of the country’s data centers are located in the country’s capital, Helsinki. Established operators, including the likes of Verne, Equinix, and atNorth, have a presence in Finland, while new operators such as Polarnode, FCDC, Arcem, and Hyperco are planning multiple developments across the country. International operators, including QTS and DayOne, are also looking to develop in Finland.
Finland’s environment, abundant land, and cheap green energy have attracted data center developers, with the Finnish Data Center Association estimating that live capacity in the country will increase from 285MW in 2025 to 1.5GW in 2030.
