Virgin Media O2 has signed a corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with The Renewables Infrastructure Group (TRIG) for power from two onshore wind farms in the UK.
The PPA, which will last ten years, is expected to provide Virgin Media O2 with 15 percent of its total energy supply needs. The exact capacity set to be provided to the telco is undisclosed.
Under the terms of the PPA, TRIG will supply power from two of its onshore wind farms – the 34MW Garreg Lwyd Wind Farm, in Powys, Wales, and the 16MW Earlseat Wind Farm in Kirkcaldy, Scotland.
The PPA will come into force in April 2026 and is expected to power Virgin Media O2 sites across the UK. Combined, the wind farms have a capacity of 50MW. It is unclear whether the facilities’ full capacity will be supplied to Virgin under the PPA. DCD has contacted the company for further information.
“This agreement marks the next step in Virgin Media O2’s journey to achieving net zero by the end of 2040 – ten years ahead of the UK,” said Dana Haidan, chief sustainability officer at Virgin Media O2. “By purchasing long-term renewable energy at scale, we’re not only cutting carbon but protecting our network from future energy shocks. Power Purchase Agreements offer price certainty, operational resilience, and long-term value.”
According to the company, the purchase forms part of its goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions across its full value chain by the end of 2040. The telco claims it has already cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 56 percent, and Scope 3 emissions by 19 percent, against its 2020 baseline.
Virgin Media O2 is a 50/50 joint venture between Liberty Global and Telefónica, which was signed in June 2021. It combines O2’s mobile network services and Virgin Media’s broadband network. Last February, it became the second UK operator to launch a 5G Standalone network.
Founded in 2013, TRIG is a Guernsey-based, renewable energy infrastructure firm. According to the company, it has a net operational capacity of approximately 2.3GW across the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Sweden, and Spain. In 2023, the company signed a ten-year corporate PPA with UK telco BT.
