Google has signed a corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Renner Energies in Belgium.
The deal will see Google will offtake power from a portfolio of six onshore wind farms currently under development in the country. The power will then be used by Google’s data centers in the region.
The cPPA will allow Google to reduce its CO2 emissions by approximately 27,000 tons per year, Renner claimed. The contract is expected to last 15 years.
Renner’s portfolio of onshore wind projects in Belgium currently comprises eight operational onshore wind farms with a combined capacity of around 30MW. It has a further 16 onshore wind farms under development. The companies did not disclose which wind farms would be tied to the PPA. The company also has wind projects in Spain and France.
“Google’s data centers are among the most energy-efficient in the world and we’re focused on responsibly growing our AI infrastructure,” said Maud Texier, director data center energy for EMEA at Google. “Our ambition to run on carbon-free by 2030 requires close collaboration with major energy companies, in every grid that we operate, like Renner Energies, who are jointly committed to long-term sustainable energy goals and to enhance energy stability and contribute to the clean energy transition in Belgium.”
The deal is part of a larger €5 billion ($5.7bn) investment by Google into its Belgian operations. The investment, announced last week, will go towards expanding the company’s data center campuses in Saint-Ghislain and aims to add a further 300 full-time jobs.
As part of the deal, the company also signed a PPA with European renewable developer Eneco for 54MW of wind power.
Google first established its data center campus in Belgium in 2009, home to the company’s Europe-West1 region.
The company is also in the process of building out a campus in Farciennes, in the province of Hainaut, breaking ground in April 2024. Official plans for that campus were first announced in July 2023.
The Saint-Ghislain campus was Google’s first in Europe, and the company has since expanded it. As of April 2024, it had five data centers on the 90-hectare site, as well as a solar plant.
Since 2007, Google says it has invested more than €5bn ($5.7bn) in Belgium data center infrastructure.
