Apple has expanded its renewable energy portfolio across Europe, adding more than 650MW of new renewable capacity.
The projects include several large-scale solar and wind projects across Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, and Romania.
According to the company, the projects will generate more than one million MWh of power on behalf of Apple users by 2030.
“By 2030, we want our users to know that all the energy it takes to charge their iPhone or power their Mac is matched with clean electricity,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy, and social initiatives. “Our new projects in Europe will help us achieve our ambitious Apple 2030 goal, while contributing to healthy communities, thriving economies, and secure energy sources across the continent.”
The investments are part of Apple’s goal to be carbon neutral across its entire footprint by 2030.
As part of the investment, Apple has signed several long-term renewable supply agreements. These include a deal with Greek renewable developer Helleniq Energy to procure power from a 110MW solar project in Greece. The project has already reached commercial operations.
In Italy, the company is supporting the development of a 129MW portfolio of solar and wind projects, with the first, located in Sicily, expected to come online this month.
In Poland, Apple has provided support to renewable energy developer Econergy to facilitate the construction of a 40MW solar project, expected to reach operational status later in the year.
In Romania, the company committed to procure power from a 99MW wind farm in Galați County, being developed by Nala Renewables.
In Latvia, Apple signed one of the first corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) in the country’s history, after inking a long-term deal with European Energy for energy from its 110MW solar farm, which is currently under construction.
Finally, in Spain, Apple enabled the development of the 131MW Castaño Solar project, which was made operational earlier this year. The project was developed by German renewable developer Ib Vogt and is located in Segovia, Spain, just north of Madrid. The company initially signed a PPA with the company in 2024 for 105MW of power from the project.
According to Apple’s latest Environmental Progress Report, the company used 2.5 billion kWh (2,500GWh) of power over 2024 to power its data center and colocation facilities. The total was an increase from last year, when its data center portfolio consumed some 2.344 billion kWh of electricity.
The capacity was used to power eight operational data centers across North America, Europe, and Asia. According to the tech giant, 100 percent of the energy was derived from renewable sources of energy, including solar, wind, biogas, and hydropower.
