Plans for more data center campuses are being announced in Finland.

In Pyhäjärvi in central Finland, Spanish renewables firm Solano is planning a 100MW campus.

On the south coast of the country, Singaporean firm Nova Complex and local player Hyperco are planning campuses in Loviisa.

Solano comes to Pyhäjärvi

– Solano

The Finnish town of Pyhäjärvi recently announced that Solano is developing a 100MW data center campus in Uusi-Olkkola.

Located on 80 hectares of municipally leased land, the campus will leverage existing grid connections and secured dark-fiber connectivity with redundant routes, developed in cooperation with PyhäNet, the local fiber operator.

The site is reportedly scalable up to 800MW. Timelines weren’t shared.

“Pyhäjärvi offers a rare combination of industrial infrastructure, abundant renewable energy, and first-class connectivity. It’s an ideal location for sustainable, large-scale digital infrastructure,” said Henrik Kiviniemi, Town Manager of Pyhäjärvi.

“Our objective is to bring projects to ready-to-build (RTB) status, maximizing their appeal to major data-center investors and operators. This Pyhäjärvi campus is the first of three large-scale developments we are advancing across the region,” said Enrique Garrido, CEO of Solano.

Solano is a Spanish renewables firm, developing solar, wind, and battery storage projects across Europe and South America.

To-date, the firm says it has completed more than 250MW of solar and some 50MW of wind projects. The company reportedly has some 3GW of projects in its pipeline, with planned data center projects in Mexico (100MW), Colombia (x3, totaling 200MW), and Finland.

Solano will be working with the town council and its development arm, Callio, which is focused on turning former mining assets and other brownfield and greenfield sites into investable developments for data center and other large load users.

Pyhäjärvi is a town and municipality in the south of the North Ostrobothnia region.

Arcem, a new data center developer in Norway, is also targeting a data center development in Pyhäjärvi.

Nova Complex comes to Loviisa

Further south, Singapore-based company Nova Complex is planning a data center development in Loviisa.

The city council of Loviisa recently announced it has granted Nova Complex the right to apply for the necessary permits from authorities and start preparatory construction work on a six-hectare site, located close to the eastern entrance to Loviisa from the E18 motorway.

Negotiations on lease and purchase agreements are ongoing in parallel with the preparatory construction work.

The company reportedly aims to invest more than €400 million ($446.5m) in the project.

Nova Complex also has a reservation for an area of approximately 20 hectares north of the site in question, as well as planning reservations for approximately 70 hectares to the south, which are still under detailed planning.

“We are pleased that the permitting process and preparations for the data center project planned in Loviisa can now begin. The project itself represents a significant investment that will not only increase economic activity and vitality in the local community, but also promote growth and renewal in Finland’s digital economy more broadly,” said Bernard Mah, Nova Complex COO.

Singapore-based Nova Complex is targeting renewable energy-powered data center developments at multiple sites globally. The company has previously announced ‘Power Campuses’ in Brazil and the Middle East: the latter would total multiple gigawatts of energy generation and storage and more than 500MW of data center capacity.

COO Mah was previously at Davidson Kempner and has had roles at Bain, JP Morgan, Boston Consulting Group, and Deutsche Bank. CTO Tom Zhou has held roles at JD.com, Microsoft, and Amazon in China.

Loviisa is a town in Finland, located on the southern coast of the country. Located east of Helsinki and south of Kouvola, Loviisa is situated in the eastern part of the Uusimaa region.

“A data center is an excellent way to utilize locally produced emission-free energy and increase its value as part of sustainable development,” added Tomas Björkroth, city director of the City of Lovisa. “We are proud that Nova Complex has chosen Lovisa as the location for its data center – it shows the attractiveness and reliability of our region. Together, we have enabled a quick start for Nova Complex in the implementation of the project.”

Hyperco, the Finnish developer recently acquired by Damac, is also targeting Loviisa. The company has reserved a 25-hectare plot near the eastern exit of Highway 7 at the start of the year, and the planned data center could enter operation in 2027/2028.

Most of Finland’s data centers are located in the country’s capital, Helsinki. Established operators, including the likes of Verne, Equinix, and atNorth, have a presence in Finland, while newer operators such as Polarnode, FCDC, Arcem, and Hyperco are planning multiple developments totaling gigawatts of capacity across the country. International operators, including QTS and DayOne, are also looking to develop in Finland.
