Holberg EEG, a Bergen-based spin-off from Haukeland University Hospital, has been fully acquired by Natus Medical, a U.S.-headquartered neurodiagnostics company. Founded in 2009, Holberg developed autoSCORE, the first AI model designed for automatic and comprehensive EEG interpretation, which received FDA clearance and a CE mark in 2024. With Natus already holding a majority stake, this transaction transfers full ownership, placing Holberg’s technology within Natus’ wider neurodiagnostic portfolio. From Holberg’s perspective, the acquisition means its AI-driven research and clinical tools will be integrated into a larger global platform, potentially scaling access to its innovations while shifting decision-making and product direction under Natus’ leadership.
Founded in 2009, Holberg EEG brings deep expertise in AI-assisted EEG interpretation. Its flagship innovation, autoSCORE, introduced to the U.S. market in August 2024, was designed to alleviate the demands on clinical resources through a deep-learning model trained on more than 30,000 expertly labeled EEG recordings. Offered exclusively with Natus NeuroWorks® software, autoSCORE is FDA 510(k) cleared for routine EEG, long-term monitoring (LTM), and ambulatory EEG studies, and has also received the CE mark for European and other applicable countries.
The acquisition combines the groundbreaking technology of Holberg EEG with the industry-leading neurodiagnostics portfolio of Natus, creating new opportunities to advance brain health through smarter, more accessible solutions.
“Bringing Holberg EEG into the Natus family is an exciting and strategic milestone for our company and the field of neurodiagnostics,” said Chris Landon, CEO of Natus. “This acquisition allows us to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge AI technology that empowers healthcare providers and technologists with faster, more accurate EEG interpretation – improving patient outcomes worldwide. We are proud to unite our deep heritage in neuro care with Holberg’s groundbreaking innovation, creating a powerful force for advancing brain health for decades.”
The Holberg EEG AI model delivers unprecedented efficiency and diagnostic confidence for clinicians interpreting complex EEG data, addressing a significant gap in neurological care. By integrating the Holberg EEG AI with the trusted EEG systems and neurodiagnostic solutions of Natus, healthcare providers and clinicians worldwide will benefit from streamlined workflows, enhanced accuracy, and improved patient outcomes.
Together, the combined 85+ years of neurodiagnostic leadership of Natus and Holberg EEG will continue to pursue AI-powered innovation to improve the lives of patients around the world.
