Sales incentives are often touted as the fuel for high-growth teams- yet most of them are built on fragile foundations of spreadsheets, manual calculations, and a whole lot of trust issues. That’s where Sergio González, CEO and Co-founder of Remuner, wants to make a difference.

In the latest episode of the EU-Startups Podcast, González joins host Marcin Lewandowski to unpack how Remuner is turning sales compensation into a strategic, AI-powered engine for growth.

Remuner recently raised €5.5 million in Seed funding, led by Seaya and joined by Pear VC and others, fuelling its ambition to become Europe’s go-to platform for AI-driven compensation. Based in Barcelona and founded just two years ago, Remuner’s platform reportedly automates commission calculations in real time, offers transparency to sales reps, and eliminates shadow accounting altogether.

“Incentives drive behaviour. Behaviour is the number one source for you to change your team’s performance. And still incentives are completely underused,” González said. He pointed to publicly listed companies still paying commissions via spreadsheets, and recounted horror stories of five-figure overpayments that slipped through unnoticed.

In the episode, González explains how Remuner’s no-code plan design empowers business teams to adjust compensation structures without waiting on IT, and how the company’s AI agent acts like a personal compensation co-pilot. Sales reps can simulate “what-if” earnings scenarios, managers can coach more effectively with real-time KPI insight, and finance teams can forecast payouts without chasing down data across tools.

González also highlighted the impact of aligning sales and compensation cycles: “If you cap commissions at some point, you’re completely incentivising your team, your top performers, to actually push back deals for the next quarter. So these kind of things are not super easy to understand from scratch when you’re designing a comp plan, but they’re super damaging for for a business.“

Remuner’s ‘global by design’ philosophy also supports multiple currencies and compliance structures, easing cross-border headaches for scale-ups and enterprise teams alike. With AI nudging reps to close the right deals at the right time – and for the right rewards – Remuner is aiming to make paydays smarter, not just bigger.

Key Takeaways:

  • Automation + AI turn commissions from manual to strategic
  • Transparency builds trust and ends shadow accounting
  • Fix sales/comp cycle misalignment to unlock growth
  • No-code design = faster changes, fewer IT bottlenecks
  • AI nudges guide reps to maximise earnings, in real time
  • “Global by design” matters: currency, compliance, culture
  • Compensation is becoming a data-driven growth lever
