European data center firm Portus has started work on a new data center in Munich, Germany.
On Friday, 12 September, Portus broke ground on Munich 2 (MUC2). Set to go live in early 2027, the facility will add 2,200 sqm (23,680 sq ft) and 5.5MW of capacity to its existing site, taking its total capacity to 7MW. Portus announced plans for MUC2 in May.
“This expansion not only strengthens the region’s digital infrastructure but also the competitiveness of local and international companies in the region,” said Marco Kain, managing director of Portus Data Centers Munich. “Proximity to our customers is a key success factor for us. Our short distances and fast response times form the basis for future-proof digital solutions.”
Arcus Infrastructure Partners formed Portus last year, rolling up Luxembourg’s European Data Hub with German operators SDC SpaceNet DataCenter and Internet Port Hamburg.
The company is expanding all three sites and is looking for further buy-and-build opportunities across Germany and neighboring countries.
In Munich, Arcus acquired SDC SpaceNet DataCenter GmbH & Co, KG (SDC) from German ISP SpaceNet AG. Launched in 2019 and located in Kirchheim, Munich, the SDC data center offers 5,400 sqm (58,125 sq ft) of data center space with capacity for 2,800 server racks. Telefónica Deutschland is a customer.
“In Kirchheim, we are creating a state-of-the-art platform for companies of all sizes – regionally anchored but with international connections,” said Falk Weinreich, Group CEO of Portus Data Centers. “The project is an important milestone in our buy-and-build growth strategy. Our goal is to provide companies in the Munich region and beyond with high-performance, sustainable, low-latency IT infrastructure, therefore contributing to Germany’s digital capability.”
Bavaria’s State Minister for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, added: “The investment by Portus Data Centers München GmbH is a strong signal for strengthening Bavaria as a digital hub, for our digital resilience, and for European data sovereignty.”
