Vantage Data Centers has launched its second data center campus in London, the UK.
Spanning 194,000 sq ft (18,000 sqm) of data center space, the site offers 20MW of IT capacity and is the result of £250 million ($340.1m) in investment from the company.
Plans for the data center were first announced in April 2023.
The data center includes a number of “sustainable features,” including air-source heat pumps and a low PUE. It will also be connected to a local district heating network to reuse waste heat.
“Our unrivaled ability to scale quickly, as demonstrated by the launch of our second campus in London, is helping our global hyperscale customers seize the considerable opportunities presented by cloud computing and AI,” said David Howson, president EMEA, Vantage Data Centers.
“This campus was part of our UK expansion plans, which the Prime Minister referenced at the launch of the UK Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan earlier this year. As part of the launch of this campus, we are honored to be involved in a vibrant and engaging community art project that celebrates the region’s important history in the growth and stability of the UK.”
The data center also features a permanent public art installation. Spanning a six-story facade, the installation dubbed “11 Million Dots” pays homage to Park Royal’s industrial history. It was developed with London-based art consultancy Loom and local artist Rafael El Baz, who collected ambient noises and machine sounds from the neighborhood’s streets and workshops and recorded more than 120 audio interviews with residents. He then translated his recordings into binary code and audio waveforms for the installation.
“It was a pleasure collaborating with Vantage Data Centers and Loom to bring this unique vision to life,” says Rafael El Baz. “As an artist, this project was about rethinking what a data center can represent. These buildings are usually hidden in plain sight, but here, we showed that they can stand proudly as cultural monuments. By transforming the voices and sounds of Park Royal into patterns on the facade, the center becomes more than just a digital data warehouse; it also preserves the memory and identity of the community.”
The company’s second London campus, Vantage also operates LHR1 in North Acton, which has two facilities totaling 430,000 sq ft (40,000 sqm) and will provide a combined IT capacity of 55MW upon completion.
The company also has a campus in Cardiff, Wales.
