Diabetes isn’t just a statistic; it’s a daily reality for millions of Europeans. According to the International Diabetes Federation, in 2024, around 66 million adults aged 27-79 across the continent (nearly 1 in 10) were living with the condition, and this number is projected to rise to 72 million by 2050. Europe also faces the world’s highest burden of type 1 diabetes, with 2.7 million people affected, many of them children and young adults learning to navigate life with constant blood sugar checks and insulin injections.
The toll isn’t only personal but also financial. Healthcare systems across Europe spend about €177.6 billion each year on diabetes, almost one-fifth of the world’s total bill. On average, that’s €2,715 per person annually, making Europe the second-most expensive region to manage the disease. But within this reality, there are sparks of hope: a wave of entrepreneurs working on smart, human-centred solutions to ease the burden and bring more freedom to those affected.
In the lines ahead, we’ve curated 10 startups founded between 2021 and today that are pushing the boundaries of innovation to help people monitor, manage, and live better with diabetes. Each of them is developing practical, everyday tools that are redefining what it means to take control of blood sugar.
Dia Beta Labs: This Northern Ireland–based biotech startup is creating next-generation therapies for obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Unlike current drugs that mainly lower blood sugar or reduce appetite, their approach focuses on protecting and repairing the pancreas’s insulin-producing beta-cells. By using specially designed human-based peptides that are stable, targeted, and long-lasting, they aim to give these cells a chance to rest, recover, and even regenerate. This could not only manage symptoms but also slow or reverse the progression of the disease, offering a more sustainable solution.
Founded in 2022, the startup has already secured €1.4 million in funding to further its mission. Backed by this investment, the team is committed to advancing research in metabolic diseases and contributing to the global effort to manage the diabetes and obesity crisis.
Diabet’: Based in Paris, Diabet’ is a HealthCare startup that makes life easier for people living with diabetes by bringing all the care they need together in one place. A team of doctors, specialists, nurses, and dietitians work side by side to provide regular check-ups, personalised support, and practical advice to help patients manage their condition with confidence. Beyond medical care, Diabet’ focuses on prevention, education, and innovative tools like telehealth to make care more accessible and tailored to each person’s lifestyle.
Since its launch in 2024, Diabet’ has been able to raise €1.3 million in funding to further develop its technology and expand its integrated approach to care. With this investment, the startup aims to strengthen patient autonomy, scale its telehealth solutions, and reinforce its role as a bridge between everyday care and specialist hospital treatment.
Holi: This Polish startup, launched in 2023, offers an integral, evidence-based programme for obesity and metabolic health. Combining physician-led medical oversight, daily psychodietetic support, behaviour change coaching, and AI-enhanced tools, Holi empowers lasting weight loss and healthier lifestyles. They address blood sugar measurement as part of their broader focus on metabolic health and obesity treatment. The platform integrates blood glucose testing into the diagnostic process for patients. This includes standard laboratory tests, such as fasting glucose levels, oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT), and HbA1c, which help assess long-term glucose control.
Users benefit from unlimited access to a dedicated care team, a personalised treatment plan, and measurable outcomes validated by a specialised medical board. Backed by €705k in funding, Holi is expanding its platform to reach more patients, refine its AI-driven tools, and further validate its model in clinical settings, aiming to position itself as a trusted solution for managing obesity and related metabolic conditions.
MEROVA Health: Launched in 2023 in Budapest, Merova Health has developed a digital platform that acts as a health hub, centralising and improving the management of diabetes care. Its system includes tools for diagnostics, diet planning, appointment scheduling, and AI-powered follow-up, to prevent serious diabetes-related complications such as amputations.
Through the patient portal, individuals can view their treatment plans, receive reminders, and communicate with their care team. Healthcare providers such as podiatrists, dietitians, and wound-care specialists can document treatments, upload photos to monitor healing, and adjust care plans as needed. All data is stored securely and shared appropriately to ensure coordinated care. Since its launch, Merova has raised €130k to support the development and expansion of its platform.
MONA.Health: This healthcare startup aims to transform screening for diabetes-related eye diseases, like diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, by making it fast, comfortable, and affordable for both patients and the healthcare system. Using deep learning and AI, MONA processes retinal images from standard eye cameras and, within seconds, identifies whether a patient shows signs that warrant referral to an ophthalmologist. The tool is designed so that a technician, not necessarily a doctor, can perform the screening in about three minutes. A detailed report is then generated via a web application and shared with a specialist, streamlining the process and reducing bottlenecks
Launched in Leuven in 2021, the startup has successfully raised €1.5 million for rapid screening for diabetes-related eye diseases using retinal images and providing critical, accessible prevention of vision loss for diabetes patients, leveraging deep learning to make screening scalable and effective.
NIQS Tech: Headquartered in Leeds, UK, NIQS is developing a new way to monitor glucose levels without needles or blood samples. Their technology is designed for continuous and accurate tracking, using a tiny glass sensor chip and a special optical method that can measure glucose directly through the skin.
Unlike older techniques that often give unreliable results due to differences in skin tone, thickness, or hydration, NIQS’s technology avoids these problems and provides highly consistent readings across a wide range of glucose levels. Founded in 2022, the startup has already secured about €953k in funding.
Olakino: Helsinki‑based, founded in 2022, offers a mobile health platform specially designed for pre‑diabetic and type‑2 diabetic individuals who want to start running. Thus, they have designed a technology that monitors the adrenaline-line release and the sugar rise, which can be dangerous for diabetic individuals. By using AI and machine learning, the app continually analyses real‑time data such as glucose levels, heart rate variability, calories burned, activity, and blood oxygen. Based on this data, the app provides personalised exercise suggestions, positive motivational feedback when users stay on track, and gentle nudges if users fall behind in their training program.
The platform can be used on a phone, Apple Watch, computer, or tablet, and it runs on a smart system in the cloud that analyses the user’s health data. Olakino has been backed with €530k in funding to keep an eye on blood sugar during training.
Steto: This startup is building digital therapies and remote monitoring tools designed to support people with diabetes in their daily care. Its mobile-based digital health platform helps people with diabetes by combining technology with real-time support from a diabetes-trained nurse working alongside endocrinologists to provide continuous guidance to patients between appointments. From helping with medical devices to managing insulin, Steto makes it easier for patients to follow their treatment plans and stay actively involved in their health.
Founded in 2022 and based in Paris, the startup has raised €1.2 million to grow its remote patient monitoring solution. By combining clinical expertise with smart digital technology, Steto seeks to improve long-term outcomes for people with diabetes while easing pressure on healthcare systems.
Triba Health: Headquartered in Ølholm, Denmark, Triba Health is a digital health startup founded in 2022 that focuses on the management and reversal of Type 2 diabetes. Their core ambition is a digital lifestyle reversal platform that provides personalised nutrition and lifestyle interventions. This service combines the digital platform with human support from a medical team that includes dietitians and doctors.
Triba Health promotes a “food-as-medicine” philosophy, aiming to address the underlying causes of Type 2 diabetes rather than just managing symptoms. Thanks to this approach, the startup has secured €334k in funding. This approach seeks to help patients reduce their long-term blood sugar levels and decrease their dependency on medication.
Una Health: Hamburg-based, this startup is developing a digital health platform designed to help individuals reverse conditions like prediabetes and type 2 diabetes through lifestyle modifications. They provide a phone app that provides users with personalised insights and coaching. It accomplishes this by integrating data from various sources, including continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), blood sugar meters, and user-inputted information about meals and activity levels. This data is then analysed by the app’s proprietary algorithm to deliver real-time feedback and actionable recommendations aimed at improving metabolic health.
Since its founding in 2021, Una Health has raised €2 million in funding to continue educating users about diabetes and nutrition through brief, accessible lessons and provide continuous support via the app’s chat function.
