A major renewable energy and AI data center campus is planned for Weida-Land in Germany.
Located in the Saxony-Anhalt municipality, the project will include a 500MW solar farm, 500MW/1,750MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), and an AI campus with a data center.
Reported by publications including PV Magazine, the project will be decentralized, with the data center and BESS located in Schraplau, and solar parks in multiple locations.
PV reports that battery storage system maker Greenmake is behind the project. Greenmake does not seem to have an online presence.
Details such as the exact location for the project or whether it has received planning permission have not been shared, though PV notes that an information event for local residents will be held in September.
The solar parks will be deployed in phases up to 2028, with an eventual target of 500MW of capacity. The BESS will similarly gradually scale up in expansion phases and will use lithium iron phosphate technology.
PV Magazine reports that the storage facility will be connected directly to the grid node of the new Schraplau-Obhausen substation, and will eventually have 800MW of power, offering 2,800MWh of capacity.
Meanwhile, the data center campus will be built “modularly” during several construction phases over a period of eight to ten years. The first units are expected to be live by the end of this decade.
The exact amount to be invested in the project has not been stated, but is expected to be in the billions.
The majority of Germany’s data centers are located in and around Frankfurt. Schraplau and the wider Saxony-Anhalt region are located southwest of Berlin, near Magdeburg. While Berlin has Germany’s second-largest data center market, Magdeburg is home to few data centers, with T-Systems operating two data centers in the area and euNetworks operating one colocation facility.
Germany’s DataHall is planning a data center in Halle/Saale, also in Saxony-Anhalt.
