Healthcare Outcomes Performance Company (HOPCo), a U.S.-based global specialist in musculoskeletal (MSK) value-based care and outcomes management, has acquired Amsterdam-based Caro Health, a digital health startup using conversational AI to improve healthcare communication.

The acquisition strengthens HOPCo’s European footprint and supports its goal of building a global, AI-driven health platform for care delivery.

“Our partnership with HOPCo enables us to accelerate our technology, expand our reach, and deliver intelligent, personalised healthcare communication on a global scale – faster and more effectively than ever before,” said Thomas Goijarts, Co-founder and CEO of Caro Health.

“It will also allow us to better serve our local customers here in the Netherlands and across Europe by leveraging HOPCo’s clinical expertise and comprehensive digital platform and services. This will help us stay focused on our core strengths while speeding up the development of patient-centric, value-based technology solutions. We’re excited to be part of the HOPCo Digital Health Team as we work to replicate the success we’ve achieved in Europe, in the United States,” he added.

Founded in 2019, Caro Health has developed a proprietary AI system that delivers personalised and scalable communication for patients and providers. Currently working with almost 40 healthcare organisations across the Netherlands and Belgium, its platform supports multiple clinical specialties, including orthopaedics and other MSK subspecialties, integrating seamlessly with electronic health record (EHR) systems to streamline processes and reduce administrative workloads.

Following the deal, Caro Co-founder Goijarts will become Head of Products for HOPCo Digital, reporting to the company’s Global Chief Information Officer. Caro Co-founder Guusje van der Heijden will lead customer success and delivery for HOPCo in Europe, focusing on expanding the company’s reach and enhancing its digital platform services for both new and existing clients.

HOPCo plans to grow its European office, adding resources to support international expansion and strengthen partnerships with healthcare providers worldwide.

Caro’s platform and team will be integrated into HOPCo’s Digital Health Division, contributing to AI enhancements for products including HOPCo Vitals, myrecovery by HOPCo, HOPCo’s EMR Ecosystem, and its cloud-based infrastructure for practices, ambulatory surgery centres, and health systems.

“We have been hugely impressed with Caro’s thoughtful approach to integrating Conversational AI into complex clinical workflows,” said Dr Tom Harte, President of HOPCo Digital. “The Caro team has clearly demonstrated that, when partnering with physicians to combine best-in-class technology with deep clinical expertise, Conversational and Generative AI can enhance both patient experience and operational workflow. This enables both physicians and administrators to focus on delivering patient care.”

With digital health partnerships in the US, UK, Australia, and Europe, HOPCo offers turn-key value-based care programmes that aim to improve patient outcomes while lowering costs. The integration of Caro’s technology is expected to enhance these efforts, delivering measurable benefits to both patients and healthcare providers across markets.

“At HOPCo, we are building the most comprehensive digital platform globally with end-to-end products and services necessary to support practices, ambulatory surgery centers, health systems, and payors – from patient management to top-tier Cloud-based security,” said Chris Martinez, Global Chief Information Officer at HOPCo.

“The integration of Caro Health’s innovative technology across our full suite of digital products and services will accelerate our AI roadmap and enable us to better support our customers across the globe in delivering high-quality, cost-effective care. Our time-to-value is crucial to our overall success, and we will continue to make strategic acquisitions, develop new products, and hire world-class engineering talent,” he added.
