A planned data center could overlap with a golf course in Rauma, Finland.
Rauma is a town on Finland’s western coast.
As reported by Golfpiste, Finnish state-owned energy company Fortum has reserved a 330-hectare land parcel for a data center, overlapping with five fairways of a golf course belonging to Rauma Golf.
Rauma Golf’s website lists 18 total fairways, meaning that the data center, if built, would reduce the total amount to 13.
A fairway is a closely mowed area between the tee box, which refers to the area where play begins, and the green, which refers to specially prepared grass around the hole.
According to CEO of Rauma Golf Samu Vahteristo, “the landowner, the City of Rauma, also has significant interests in driving the matter forward. The current field area is 53 hectares, which speaks volumes about the scale of the project.
Details about capacity are not available.
A decision on whether to implement the project is set to be made in spring 2026.
Fortum previously partnered with Microsoft to recycle waste heat output from its data centers. The utility has started pursuing data center projects of its own, and in June of last year, Fortum signed a letter of intent with the city of Jyvaskyla to build a data center complex across 20 hectares of land in the Seppalankangas area.
Most of Finland’s data centers are located in the country’s capital, Helsinki. Established operators, including the likes of Verne, Equinix, and atNorth, have a presence in Finland, while new operators such as Polarnode, FCDC, Arcem, and Hyperco are planning multiple developments across the country.
