JLL appoints Marc Burns as head of UK affordable housing

Marc Burns

JLL has appointed Marc Burns as its new head of UK affordable housing. He will lead a team of 60 and play a key role in driving growth and innovation across the firm’s affordable housing services.

Burns, one of several appointments made recently across JLL’s UK Residential Valuation business, brings two decades of experience in the affordable housing sector, having worked at Drivers Jonas and then King Sturge, before it became part of JLL in 2011, where he has remained throughout his career. The move to the real estate sector followed a banking career trading foreign exchange derivatives that began in the early 1990s.

Burns has also led the valuation workstream on numerous successful bond issuances and Euro Medium-Term Note (EMTN) programmes across the affordable housing sector, including Notting Hill Genesis’ recent £250m sustainable bond issuance and the launch of Sovereign Network Group’s £1.5bn EMTN programme.

Burns succeeds Richard Petty, who previously held the position and played a key role in building the team at Drivers Jonas, before developing JLL’s affordable housing offering in the UK – Petty will continue in his role as head of UK residential valuation at JLL.

Burns said: “With an ongoing housing crisis and pressure to deliver more affordable homes, it is clear that housing remains a top priority for both the Government and the whole social sector, which wants to do all it can to deliver more and better homes.

“There is a real opportunity to drive technological innovation across all JLL’s services to the affordable housing sector, and to build on the great work led by Richard, as well as the high-quality service our team is known for. I look forward to working with colleagues, clients, and partners to ensure JLL remains at the forefront of supporting the sector’s evolving needs and helping address the unmet demand for affordable homes.”

Petty commented: “I have built up and led the affordable housing team for many years, through three different firms, and have loved the role. But for the last 12 years, I have also been responsible for our residential valuation business across all sectors, and that role has grown in scale and complexity in recent years. Now is therefore the appropriate time to separate my responsibilities, so that both roles get the time and attention they need. I know that affordable housing will be in the best of hands with Marc and our other directors – and I am still going to be heavily involved in the sector, through client work, conferences and non-executive director roles.”
