Russia’s Megafon has launched data centers in the cities of Yekaterinburg and Tver.

Yekaterinburg is located east of the Ural Mountains in central Russia. Tver is northwest of Moscow, in western Russia.

The Russian telco giant announced that each facility would offer 1MW of capacity, but that high-load racks could be installed in order to bring capacity up to 1.5MW. Each data center will be around 800 sqm (8,611 sq ft) and accommodate 110 racks.

Director of energy systems and data centers at Megafon, Alexander Bryazgin, said: “We are increasing the performance of the infrastructure of existing data centers and building new sites, focusing on the requirements of energy efficiency and high performance of computing power.”

Megafon has had to cope with the fallout following the war in Ukraine. The telco was disconnected from the London Internet Exchange in March 2022, and found itself subject to a cyberattack in January of this year from Ukraine’s defense ministry, which temporarily disabled Internet access to its customers.

Internet shutdowns in Russia have also become more frequent as the Russian state attempts to thwart potential Ukrainian drone strikes.
