BW Group subsidiaries, BW Digital and BW ESS, have launched a new company focused on the development of ‘sustainable’ data centers in the Nordics and Canada.
According to the companies, BW Velora will leverage the digital infrastructure expertise of BW Digital with BW ESS’ extensive experience developing energy infrastructure in Europe. Doing so, the companies claim, will position the new entity “at the intersection of digital infrastructure development, access to renewable energy, and engagement with local communities.”
BW Velora will offer a vertically integrated service, spanning from early-stage development to ready-to-build projects, encompassing land and utilities, regulatory approvals, design, and execution services.
The new company intends to drive regional industrial growth and will anchor industries such as AI, renewable energy, carbon capture, and advanced digital services.
BW Velora will be headquartered in Oslo, Norway, and was founded by industry veterans Paal Skoe, Nils Kristian Liveng-Ness, and Christian Ekeberg. Skoe will head the company as its CEO, Liveng-Ness will hold the position of executive director, and Ekeberg will also act as an executive director for the company.
In a LinkedIn post reflecting on the news, Liveng-Ness said: “At BW Velora, we build on BW Group’s decades of industry experience and unite BW Digital’s digital infrastructure expertise with BW ESS’s energy project experience. Together, we’re building an integrated ecosystem that creates powerful synergies, drives sustainable industrial growth, and fuels a smarter, more sustainable future.”
“BW Velora is strategically positioned to meet the rapidly growing demand for digital infrastructure,” said Paal Skoe, co-founder and CEO of BW Velora. “Our innovative approach significantly reduces risks, simplifies project execution, and accelerates entry into high-performance data center markets, ultimately driving substantial economic growth and sustainability in local communities.”
BW ESS is a global Battery Energy Storage (BESS) owner and operator. It has projects across a range of countries, including the UK, Australia, Italy, Germany, and Sweden. In total, the company has more than 500MWh of operating BESS projects, with more than 2.5GWh under construction and a development pipeline of around 7GW.
BW Digital, is the digital infrastructure arm of BW Group. The company owns and operates the Hawaiki subsea cable linking Australia, New Zealand, and the US. The company is developing the Hawaiki Nui cable set to link the US, Australia, Indonesia, and Singapore. The company is currently building its first data center campus in Batam, Indonesia, expected to have a capacity of around 120MW.
