French telco Bouygues Telecom has signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with energy-from-waste (EfW) firm Suez in France.
The PPA will see Suez supply 53GWh of power per year from its EfW portfolio. Over the term of the agreement, the telco aims to source up to 800GWh of power through fixed-price agreements complemented by investments in renewable energy certificates.
“Waste-to-energy is a central pillar of the group’s strategy to support the energy transition of its customers, including local authorities and industrial clients. Signing this PPA with Bouygues Telecom marks a significant milestone in our ability to support businesses to decarbonize,” said Suez CEO of waste France business unit, David Lamy.
The PPA is part of Bouygues’ broader decarbonization goals. The telco has pledged to reduce its carbon footprint and that of its customers by 2030, with plans to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 29.4 percent and Scope 3 by 17.5 percent, agsint a 2021 baseline.
Commenting on the PPA, Bouygues Telecom purchasing director Eric Laurent said: “This partnership with Suez is an important step forward in our environmental commitment.
“It diversifies our PPA portfolio, which now stands at 87GWh per year, while providing long-term price visibility for all parties involved. The delivery of a guaranteed baseload electricity profile, ensuring a 24/7 power supply, is a key advantage for our electricity supply.”
Suez operates 34 waste treatment plants in France, recovering more than 3.5 million tonnes of waste annually for local energy production. These include facilities in Créteil, Toulouse, and Isséane.
Bouygues Telecom is France’s third-oldest telco provider. In May, it was reported that the company put its joint tower venture with SFR up for sale. The unit, called Infracos, manages around 3,500 rooftop terraces, pylons, and other high mobile network points in rural areas of France.
