Spanish data center firm Box2bit is aiming to develop a new campus in Malaga.
As reported by local press, Box2bit aims to invest €279 million ($320.2m) developing a 15,000 sqm (161,460 sq ft) data center on Calle Canadá, in the El Viso industrial area of Malaga. The project was initially approved by the city council earlier this month.
The three-to-four-story project will reportedly total around 12,770 sqm (137,455 sq ft) of IT space. Solar panels and an on-site substation are also planned.
Located on Spain’s south coast in Andalusia, Málaga is a municipality and the capital of the Province of Málaga. Other operators in the area include Templus, DataRush, Olivenet/ODC, and Aire.
Backed by power company Capital Energy, Box2bit was founded in 2021. The company describes itself as a green data center developer focused on building on the Iberian Peninsula.
It previously announced plans to spend €3 billion ($3.26bn) building two data centers in the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain, near Guadalajara and Toledo.
Last year, the company announced plans to develop a €3.4 billion ($3.69bn) data center campus in Zaragoza. Box2Bit is building the first of five facilities on 28-hectares at the Entreviñas industrial estate in Cariñena, south west of Zaragoza in Spain’s Aragon region. Known as Proyecto Ebro, construction work on the site is expected to start in Q4 2025, and the build is likely to take four years.
In total, the company is aiming to bring 2GW of data center capacity online, and says its facilities will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy.
Capital Energy claims a portfolio totaling 35GW of operations and in-development wind and solar assets across Spain and Portugal.
