Unikum, Sweden’s largest school portal, has acquired edtech company StudyBee in a move aimed at consolidating digital learning tools for Swedish schools. StudyBee, known for its modular assessment and insights products integrated with Google Classroom, will continue to operate under its own name and team. The acquisition enables closer integration of StudyBee’s user-focused design and analytics tools with Unikum’s broader platform, which is used by over 100 municipalities and more than 1 million users. The merger reflects a broader trend in the sector toward unified, data-informed solutions spanning the full learning journey from primary to adult education. Both companies report ongoing growth and say the combined offering will strengthen support for schools’ everyday planning, assessment, and student monitoring.
Unikum is a digital platform used by schools across Sweden to manage planning, documentation, assessment, and communication. It is implemented in over 100 municipalities and supports over 1 million user accounts. The platform is designed to align with Swedish educational structures and is used throughout all levels of education, from preschool to adult learning. It offers tools that support curriculum adherence and administrative needs, with features that integrate with commonly used systems like Google Workspace and Microsoft Teams.
StudyBee is a Swedish software company that provides digital tools for assessment and student progress tracking, primarily for use in Google Classroom environments. Its products are used in primary, secondary, and adult education, with a focus on aligning with Swedish grading criteria and education workflows. Founded in 2017 and based in Malmö, StudyBee has been adopted by a number of schools and municipalities prior to its acquisition by Unikum.
The merger takes place through Sweden’s largest learning portal Unikum acquiring the fast-growing company StudyBee AB, which is used in an increasing number of municipalities and schools. The merger means that schools now receive both a sharper and broader offering with a focus on user-friendly solutions throughout the learning journey. The focus on AI development and user experience sets the bar for the entire school industry.
“We are increasing the pace of development and the opportunity to reach even more schools with tools that really make a difference,” says Johan Henricson, Managing Director at StudyBee.
StudyBee continues under the same name and with the same team as before, and continues to develop StudyBee Assess, StudyBee Insights and StudyBee Mobile for primary, secondary and adult education in close collaboration with users – but now with extra muscle.
“Together with Unikum, we are taking a faster path to, in a sustainable way, scale up to strengthen even more schools with user-friendliness and innovative thinking in their important work with learning and student support. It is clear that Unikum, like StudyBee, fundamentally comes from a genuine desire to facilitate and improve,” says Johan Henricson, Managing Director at StudyBee.
StudyBee contributes to Unikum with its ultra-modular product portfolio, its deep expertise around Google Classroom, and its unique work with design and user experience processes, and will thus help strengthen Unikum’s offering.
“The team behind StudyBee has done a fantastic job, working closely with teachers and school leaders to create a smooth user experience in daily school work. Now more upper secondary schools will benefit from StudyBee, and gain access to Unikum’s modern data-driven tools to see, understand and improve throughout the learning journey,” says Bo Kristoffersson, CEO at Unikum.
Both StudyBee and Unikum are in strong growth phases. StudyBee has quickly gained the trust of schools and municipalities around the country, and is growing at a rapid pace. Unikum is growing continuously and today has over 100 municipalities and independent school chains and over 1 million users. The 50 employees in the companies – located in Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm – are all 100% focused on creating the most modern and easy-to-use tools for learning.
“I and the whole team are very much looking forward to starting working together with Unikum and are delighted with the warm and enthusiastic reception. It will be incredibly exciting to see what we can achieve together now that we have decided to make data-driven work user-friendly, and finally give the entire school staff the opportunity to follow the students’ progress and challenges in real time – not in retrospect,” says Johan Henricson.
