A 100MW data center is set to be developed on the west coast of Denmark.
In a post to LinkedIn, Danish real estate firm Thylander revealed plans for a “fully Danish developed, operated, and owned hyperscale data center.”
The 100MW facility in Esbjerg is set to launch in 2026 with an initial 10-20MW, and will have expansion potential to 200MW. Thylander said it is working with energy investor Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) on the project.
Esbjerg is a seaport city and the seat of Esbjerg Municipality on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in southwest Denmark.
“We intend to change the fact that all major data centers in the country are in foreign hands,” said Thylander CEO, Bjarke Mikkelsen. “It is certainly something we can build and operate here in Denmark with the highest standards. We are already well advanced in the data center area, but all major data centers in the country are in foreign hands, and we intend to change that.”
The facility will reportedly reuse the seawater cooling infrastructure from the Esbjerg power plant and make its heat available to the local district heating network.
Anders Frich Mathiesen, head of Thylander’s data center business, added: “Esbjerg meets all the conditions for a good location. At the same time, it is important that we get the direct fiber connection to Europe down through Germany, where you don’t have to worry about sabotage or a ship’s anchor cutting an underwater cable.”
Founded in 1986, Thylander is a Danish real estate developer and investor. The company’s portfolio currently totals 74 properties and 10 property funds.
Bulk operates a data center in Esbjerg. The DK01 campus opened in 2019, with the capacity to initially offer 20MW across 50,000 sqm (538,200 sq ft). Meta previously acquired land for a data center in Esbjerg, but is yet to announce any project in the municipality.
“This is the result of a targeted regional effort to make Esbjerg a digital hub in Denmark. The project is a win for the entire region, and we are proud to contribute to a significant strengthening of the country’s digital backbone,” said Jesper Frost Rasmussen (V), Mayor of Esbjerg Municipality.
Founded in 2012, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners is a Danish investment firm specializing in infrastructure investments. The company has previously signed energy deals with the likes of Google and MediaTek.
Henrik Hansen, CEO of the Danish Data Center Industry, added: “We are pleased that the Danish data center sector and the surrounding digital infrastructure ecosystem have matured to be able to construct Danish-owned data centers. The latest growth forecasts show a growing need for more data centers of various types, and we welcome all new initiatives that bring fresh dynamics to the market.”
