A cable landing station is set to be developed outside Valencia, Spain, for a subsea cable linking the Iberian nation with Italy.
Valencia Digital Port Connect (VDPC), a Spanish telecoms infrastructure company, has selected the municipality of Sagunto as the landing site for the submarine cable and a multi-purpose data center that will offer up to 10MW.
Set on a 3,800 sqm (40,900 sq ft) plot some 30km north of Valencia, the two-story CLS/data center will be able to host up to four subsea cables. Totaling 4,800 sqm (51,665 sq ft) of floorspace and capacity for more than 400 racks, the facility will feature four data halls, two meet-me rooms, and include a 300kW rooftop solar deployment.
Operations are expected to begin in early 2028.
VDPC is developing the Barracuda submarine cable project in collaboration with private equity firm Teset Capital. Linking Genoa and Valencia, the 1,060 km, 12-fiber pair cable will offer 32 Tbps per fiber pair. It will include branching units for potential route expansion. Details on the Genoa landing haven’t been shared.
“The Barracuda project will strengthen the region’s digital infrastructure, boost the local economy, and provide high-speed connectivity to businesses and institutions,” said Enrique Martín Gullón, CEO of Valencia Digital Port Connect. “We are responding to a world increasingly driven by data, and we are confident that this project will have a positive impact on the economic recovery of the Valencian community following the effects of the recent storms.”
VDPC has also signed a deal with Spanish telecoms wholesaler Axent for the joint development of telecommunications infrastructure.
Shareholders in VDPC are listed as Teset, submarine cable consultants Pelagian, and Spanish real estate developer Joyfasa.
The Barracuda project was originally planned in 2022 to connect Alicante and Marseille as a sub-system of the Medusa cable, but was re-announced in April with a new route. Teset Capital has announced a €100 million ($113.6m) investment in the project.
“Through this strategic investment, Teset Capital reaffirms its commitment to developing cutting-edge and sustainable telecommunications infrastructure,” said José Arango, partner at Teset Capital. “At a time when cloud services, artificial intelligence, and the expansion of 5G networks are driving an increasing demand for high-speed, low-latency data transmission, this project is more relevant than ever.”
A 1.5MW cable landing station was previously planned south of Valencia in Alicante. The status of that project is unclear.
Sagunto is currently the landing point for the Romulo cable. Installed in 2011 and owned by grid operator Red Electrica, the combined power/fiber cable runs 237km to the island of Mallorca.
Nearby Valencia is home to three cables; Balalink, Oran-Valencia (aka ORVAL), and Penbal-4.
Teset Capital was founded by Arango, Angel Escudero, and Javier Zabala in December 2023, with its initial investment in energy storage facilities. Since then, the company has established the company Trinity Fibre Networks (TFN), specializing in fiber optic networks in Spain.
