International private equity firm APL Group is developing a data center in central Finland.
The company (also known as Asia Pacific Land) this week announced the development of a hyperscale data center campus in Varkaus, in the province of Eastern Finland.
The data center will be built on a 28-hectare site and has a planned capacity of up to 100MW. The first phase of the 75,000 square meter (807,295 sq ft) project will offer 60MW, with an additional 40MW planned.
“This is a new milestone for APL as it enters the dynamic Nordic market, stable and business-friendly Finland,” said Peng Zhang, APL’s Europe director and CEO. “We are committed to working closely with the city of Varkaus to promote long-term growth and new opportunities, and to strengthen the region in the digital economy.”
APL will be partnering with local data center firm Scale42. The company is led by the founders of Fjord Power and Hydrokraft (now AI cloud firm Nscale). Reports that Scale42 was interested in a facility in Varkaus alongside a partner surfaced in March.
Previous reports suggest construction could start as soon as 2026, with the first phase going live in 2027.
Founded in 1994, APL Group is a private investment firm focused on real estate, digital infrastructure, renewable energy, and private equity transactions.
The company previously partnered with Global Compute Infrastructure to develop two data center campuses in Japan. This is the investor’s first data center project in the Nordics.
“Varkaus offers an excellent framework for the development of modern digital infrastructure by combining energy availability, digital readiness, and environmental sustainability. We welcome APL to support the city’s transformation into a regional hub through its new data center,” said Joonas Hänninen, Mayor of Varkaus.
As reportedly by Yle, Varkaus has been trying to lure a data center developer to the city for several years.
