Travel technology company Amadeus has signed an agreement with Google Cloud to use its cloud and AI technology.
In other customer news, AI-powered business company Pigment and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs have also signed contracts with the cloud provider.
Amadeus signs agreement to use cloud computing and AI for travel industry
Travel technology company Amadeus has signed an agreement with Google Cloud to use the latter’s cloud and AI technology.
As part of the agreement, Amadeus will be migrating some of its technical platform to Google Cloud, and will also build future services on the cloud platform, taking advantage of the company’s AI offerings.
The company also plans to use Google Cloud’s Vertex AI to explore LLMs and potentially establish agentic AI solutions.
Sylvain Roy, CTO of Amadeus, said: “We are thrilled to embark on this partnership with Google Cloud, which will enable us to strengthen our multicloud strategy and drive AI-powered innovation. This collaboration will allow us to explore new innovation projects using Google Cloud’s data and AI capabilities, as we transform the travel industry by offering unmatched connectivity and efficiency to the entire ecosystem.”
Isabelle Fraine, MD of Google Cloud France, added: “We are excited to partner with Amadeus to support its cloud-based operations and AI innovation. We believe that our open approach to cloud and AI, our secure and reliable infrastructure, and our own innovation capacities in generative AI will support Amadeus to operate in more regions, with more customers and partners, for the benefit of the whole travel industry.”
Earlier this year, Amadeus renewed its cloud computing contract with Microsoft.
Following on from a 2021 agreement, Amadeus recommitted to its cloud migration strategy and will use Microsoft’s cloud and AI technologies. It is unclear what the Google agreement will mean for the deal previously signed with Microsoft.
The company initially signed a contract with Microsoft in 2021, under which it moved more than 50 percent of its applications to the public cloud. The new contract with Microsoft was set to “further advance” this migration.
Amadeus IT Group is a Spanish multinational company. The company has a data center in Erding, Germany. In 2018, the Amadeus website said that the data center handled more than 1.6 billion transactions per day and housed more than 7,500 servers.
In a 2021 interview with Travolution, the company said that the Microsoft deal would not see an “immediate” shutdown of its data center. DCD has contacted Amadeus for more information about the company’s existing data center and when a planned complete exit will occur, if at all.
In 2017, Amadeus’ online booking platform, Amadeus Altrea, crashed for fifteen minutes, leading to flight delays in seven different airports. The disruption was put down to a “network issue.” It was not confirmed at the time if the issue lay in the Erding data center.
Google signs deals with Pigment and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs
In other customer news, Google has signed a deal with AI business planning and performance management company Pigment, as well as the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs.
Pigment will be using Google Cloud to “accelerate” the adoption of AI planning across global enterprises, and hopes that its customers, including Unilever, Snowflake, and DPD, will be able to take advantage of the technology.
Pigment will be using Google Cloud AI-optimized infrastructure, as well as storage and analytics technology.
Pigment will further use the Gemini and other models available in Google’s Vertex AI’s Model Garden, and Google Cloud’s advanced agent AI solutions, including Agentspace, and Agent Development toolkit, among others.
“At Pigment, we’re pioneering the use of Agentic AI in business planning, empowering AI agents to proactively model scenarios, uncover opportunities, and guide strategic decisions,” said Éléonore Crespo, co-CEO and co-founder of Pigment. “Our partnership with Google Cloud accelerates this vision, enabling companies to adapt faster and plan with greater clarity and confidence in an increasingly dynamic world.”
“Google Cloud’s approach to AI is a holistic and open one. From our infrastructure to our latest agent solutions, we are creating an innovative and fast-evolving ecosystem that benefits from and fosters state-of-the art AI technologies,” said Isabelle Fraine, MD at Google Cloud in France. “Pigment’s ambition to be at the forefront of AI innovation and to scale rapidly aligns closely with our own approach, and we’re delighted to be supporting the company as it expands and advances its value proposition within core markets.”
Google Cloud has also signed a deal with Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) for a startup program dubbed the “Google for Startups Accelerator Southeast Asia: Indonesia, AI-Focused.”
According to Google, Indonesian startups account for more than one in four of the total participants in the regional Google Startups Accelerator programs. Among those to take part are Gojek, Noice, Aruna, Sekolah.mu, and Kata.ai.
Meutya Hafid, the Indonesian Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs, said: “We thank Google for its consistent support in fostering the growth of Indonesian startups over the past decade. This aligns with the government’s Golden Indonesia 2045 vision, where technology, especially AI, is expected to drive equitable and sustainable economic progress.
“Through our collaboration with Google Cloud, we are launching the ‘Indonesia, AI-Focused’ program. This is a public-private partnership designed to empower Indonesian startups. They will gain access to world-class technology and training, enabling them to create meaningful, AI-driven innovations for key sectors like education, healthcare, finance, agriculture, smart cities, environmental sustainability, and social services.”
Earlier this month, Google announced that it had expanded its Indonesian cloud region’s capacity, while last month, Microsoft officially launched a cloud region in the country.
Details on Google’s cloud expansion were not shared, though Fanly Tanto, country director of Indonesia, Google Cloud said: “Google Cloud’s Jakarta cloud region powers many essential services for Indonesian organizations, from Bio Farma’s research and development of vaccines, to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s delivery of teaching and learning experiences, to digital banking, e-commerce, food deliveries, remote work, and more.”
The cloud provider first announced plans to establish a region in Jakarta back in 2018, and launched its Jakarta cloud region in 2020, making it the first US hyperscaler to enter the country.
