Swedish data center firm Bahnhof is developing an underground data center in Gothenburg.
The company this week announced plans for the Bunkerberget data center in central Gothenburg’s Gamlestaden. The site has been acquired from Bunkeberget AB, but terms weren’t shared.
Formerly known as Bunkeberget, Bunkerberget was first blasted during World War II as a shelter for the citizens of Gothenburg. During the Cold War, the cave was further developed into an industrial bunker to ensure production for manufacturing firm SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken) in the event of war. SKF sold the property to Bunkeberget AB in 2017.
The mountain room covers approximately 6,000 sqm (64,585 sq ft) and has a nine-meter ceiling height, with the entire site totaling some 28,000 sqm (301,390 sq ft). Further specifications and data center development timelines weren’t shared, but work is due to start after the summer, according to the company’s most recent earnings report.
The site is currently used as a skatepark. According to local press, skaters had been using the site since around 1998, and work is ongoing to find a new location for the skatepark. Part of the site used to host the Berg211 event space.
Bunkeberget Skatepark, run by the Gothenburg Skateboarding Association (GSF), this week posted to Facebook: “It is with great sadness that we hereby have to announce that late last night we received the sad news that the landlord to Bunkeberget Skatepark has chosen not to renew our lease after mid-August.”
The Bunkerberget will be Bahnhof’s seventh data center and second bunker facility. The company operates facilities in Stockholm (x4), Malmö, and Kista. The company’s Pionen data center is located in a nuclear-proof bunker under the Vita Bergen mountains on Södermalm in Stockholm that was built in the 1940s as a civil defence facility to protect government functions in the outbreak of war.
“It will be incredibly fun to take on this project!” Bahnhof CEO Jon Karlung said on X. “Gothenburg as Europe’s digital port for rock-solid communication & trade. We hope to also include a human dimension in some form. Bunkerberget as a meeting place for both machines & people.”
Founded in 1994, Bahnof offers broadband, colocation, and cloud services. The firm also operates in Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Germany.
