Peter Carlsson, the cofounder of bankrupt Swedish gigafactory Northvolt, has joined a new AI startup, taking a significant stake in the company, according to reports.
Carlsson owns between 25 and 50% of Aris Machina, Swedish news site Breakit reports, describing the company as developing software for “manufacturing, factory design and production.” The startup is renting a coworking space in central Stockholm.
Aris’ CEO is Northvolt alum Siddharth Khullar, who also owns a stake in the company. Khullar joined Northvolt in 2022, as a machine learning engineer, before becoming the company’s VP of software. Khullar previously worked as an engineer at Apple.
Carlsson cofounded Northvolt in 2016, after working on supply chain logistics at Tesla. Under his leadership, the company raised over $13bn in debt and equity and started work on factories across Europe and North America.
But Northvolt then hit troubled waters, falling behind on orders and struggling to secure emergency funding. The company filed for bankruptcy in November last year. Carlsson stepped down as CEO the same month, and told a press conference that he accepted the blame for the company’s fate.
“I must take responsibility for the fact that we have ended up in this situation. I accept that responsibility,” he said.
Earlier this year, it was also reported that Carlsson had started an investment vehicle, Ekenäs Venture, together with his wife.
