Keppel DC REIT has signed a ten year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Greencoat Renewables to power two data centers in Dublin, Ireland.

The PPA will see Keppel purchase the entire capacity generated from Greencoat’s 13.3MW Ballingcollig onshore wind farm in County Kerry. The wind farm is expected to generate 31.5GWh of capacity per annum.

The capacity will be used to power its Keppel DC Dublin 1 and Keppel DC Dublin 2 data centers. Keppel’s Dublin 1 site in the Citywest Business Campus, was built in 2000. Keppel acquired its Dublin 2 site in 2017 from Dataplex.

Reflecting on the PPA, Gary Watson, country manager, Keppel DC REIT (Ireland) said: “Keppel DC REIT (Ireland) is delighted to meet our 2030 target of using 100 percent Irish renewable energy for our operations five years ahead of schedule. We firmly believe that delivering on our commitment will help our clients achieve their sustainability goals and solidify us as their partner of choice.”

The PPA is the second between the two companies in the Irish market, having previously signed a ten-year agreement last April for 67GWh per year from Greencoat’s Ballybane Phase 1 wind farm in County Cork, Ireland.

The execution of the most recent PPA, Keppel claims, means that the entire capacity of the two data centers is now covered by renewable power. Last May, the company signed a two PPAs with Mytilineos Energy & Metals for 14.28MW of solar power in Ireland.

Before this, in January 2024, the firm applied to build battery storage systems at its two data centers in Dublin amid ongoing concerns about the amount of electricity available in Ireland’s grid for data centers.

Commenting on the latest PPA, Paul O’Donnell, partner at Schroders Greencoat said: “Our second PPA with Keppel DC REIT further strengthens our position as a trusted provider of renewable energy, supporting our partners with their decarbonization efforts and advancing the energy transition. Looking ahead, data centers powered by renewable energy will be a key industrial enabler for the next phase of economic development.”

Greencoat has a portfolio of 39 wholly or partly-owned renewable assets, with an installed capacity of more than 1.5GW. According to the company, it has signed six PPAs for around 540GWh of power, with an average tenor of eight years.
