Revolut is one of Europe’s most valuable companies. Founded in 2015 by Nik Storonsky and Vlad Yatsenko as a financial travel app, it’s since expanded into various verticals including business banking, travel insurance, savings and stock trading.
The neobank has also raised more than $1.5bn in primary funding from investors such as Balderton and Lakestar and last August minted a $45bn valuation in an employee share sale.
Yesterday, Revolut celebrated its second consecutive year in the black, with pre-tax profits doubling to £1.1bn and revenue soaring from £1.8bn to £3.1bn.
Sifted mapped out all the board members who have helped steer Revolut to becoming a company with more than £1bn in profits.
So who’s on Revolut’s board?
Nik Storonsky, chief executive officer and board member since 2013
A former derivatives trader at Credit Suisse and Lehman Brothers, Nik Storonsky is one of Revolut’s cofounders and has served on its board since the company’s inception as its CEO.
Earlier this month, the Revolut boss increased his ownership stake in the company by acquiring an “indirect, non-voting interest” as part of its reorganisation of its ownership structure. Storonsky now owns, directly or indirectly, more than 25% of Revolut’s issued share capital, the report said.
Storonsky is also a member of the board’s nomination committee, which reviews the appointments of each non-executive director.
Vlad Yatsenko, chief technology officer and board member since 2017
Vlad Yatsenko founded Revolut with Storonsky in 2015 as its chief technology officer. Yatsenko was formerly an application developer at Deutsche Bank and a senior software engineer at Credit Suisse.
Caroline Britton, board member since 2019
A Deloitte veteran, Caroline Britton spent more than three decades at the management consulting giant before taking on non-exec director roles at Revolut, money-saving platform Moneysupermarket and Berlin-based Sirius Real Estate. In her spare time, Britton has done philanthropic work with organisations like the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Royal Opera House.
Martin Gilbert, board member since 2020
Martin Gilbert heads up Revolut’s board of directors and is also a member of its remuneration committee, which sets the salaries for its top 25 highest-paid employees and oversees the company’s wider compensation policy.
A former co-chief executive officer of asset manager Standard Life Aberdeen, Gilbert assumed the role of chairman after informally advising Storonsky for several months. Until November 2019, he chaired the practitioner panel of the Prudential Regulation Authority, a UK financial regulator which supervises the financial services. He was also deputy chairman of Sky’s board until 2018.
Michael Sherwood, board member since 2020
Michael Sherwood acts as an independent non-executive director at Revolut. He also chairs its remuneration committee and holds the position of deputy chairman. Sherwood was previously the vice chairman of Goldman Sachs and the co-chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs International until 2016, after spending 31 years at the bank.
John Sievwright, board member since 2021
John Sievwright spent 20 years at Merrill Lynch in various global leadership roles, including COO for the international division. Before that, he held finance and accounting roles at Bankers Trust and Bank of Tokyo International. At Merrill Lynch, he also served as President of the Futures Industry Association. He has been a Director of Burford Capital since May 2020 and is a member of its Audit and Compensation Committees.
Ian Wilson, board member since 2022
An expert in risk and compliance management, Ian Wilson cut his teeth in the mid-2000s working for the likes of Santander, Tesco Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland. More recently, Wilson has served as chief risk officer for both Monzo and Charter Court Financial Services.
He is a fellow and former vice president of Chartered Banker Institute in Scotland, serves as chair of the Scottish Building Society and is a non-exec director of Danish SME bank Kompasbank.
Dan Teodosiu, board member since 2023
Dan Teodosiu has held senior positions at Google, Microsoft and HP Labs over a career spanning more than three decades.
