The La Fe Health Research Institute (IIS La Fe) has begun construction of a high-performance computing (HPC) data center in Valencia, Spain.
According to the IIS La Fe, the center will provide the institute with the compute infrastructure necessary to analyze large volumes of clinical data and medical images.
The supercomputer is slated to be complete in June 2025 and is expected to cost around €697,000 ($794,367). It has been jointly funded by the Ministries of Innovation, Universities, Science, and Digital Society, the Ministries of Education, Culture, Universities, and Employment, and the Biomedical Imaging Research Group at IIS La Fe.
No information about the compute infrastructure powering the project has been released; however, in a statement announcing the data center, IIS La Fe said it will be GPU-based. Additionally, a LinkedIn post from IIS La Fe announcing the project tagged Kyndryl, suggesting that the IT service management company will be responsible for overseeing the project.
DCD has reached out to IIS La Fe regarding the compute infrastructure and to clarify Kyndryl’s involvement.
“This infrastructure will allow the application of artificial intelligence models that detect patterns in medical images with unprecedented precision,” said Dr. Martí Bonmatí, head of the IIS La Fe’s research group. “This will not only facilitate the work of radiologists but will also improve the personalization of treatments for each patient.”
In addition to supporting data analysis, the supercomputer will also help to strengthen “interdisciplinary collaboration between experts in artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, and data science,” whilst also serving as a training platform for researchers and students.
“The project will foster experimentation with new computational models, algorithm validation in massive datasets, and the generation of knowledge applicable to both research and innovation,“ IIS La Fe said.
