Spanish construction firm ACS is planning to develop a data center in Aragon, Spain.
As reported by Heraldo, ACS and energy firm Benbros aim to invest €1.2 billion ($1.3bn) in their planned data center in La Puebla de Alfindén, outside Zaragoza.
The 50-hectare site will reportedly offer 150MW. Construction is reportedly set to go live in the first half of 2027.
The company is said to have filed with the national grid operator, Red Eléctrica de España, to double the total capacity of the campus in the future.
The City Council is reportedly the majority owner of the site.
Traditionally known as a construction firm serving clients, ACS has recently pivoted to developing its own data centers that can be leased or sold to customers. Recent reports suggest the company has a potential development pipeline totaling 5GW globally.
The company’s Q3 2024 results presentation highlights an investment strategy for greenfield data centers. It noted 1.1GW of capacity (278MW in Spain, 220MW in Australia, 300MW in the US, and 300MW in Chile) totaling $3.4 billion in equity. The company says it has a further 4GW in “additional opportunities.”
The company’s Iridium unit in 2023 acquired a 6.7-hectare parcel of land in the Alcalá de Henares area of Madrid for the construction of a new 50MW data center.
ACS recently filed to develop a five-building campus in Fort Worth, Texas.
ACS is said to be developing another data center in Zaragoza, in the nearby Recycling Technology Park (PTR) located in La Cartuja. Through its Iridium unit, the company recently signed an agreement with Sareb to acquire a group of plots totaling 180,000 square meters.
Microsoft has a major presence around Zaragoza, with multiple campuses in development. At full build-out, the company could invest more than €10bn ($10.4bn) in the region. Amazon also has a Spanish cloud region comprised of three data center sites around Zaragoza. QTS and Box2bit are also developing campuses around Zaragoza.
