European cloud provider OVHcloud has signed a ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with German solar developer Sunnic Lighthouse GmbH to power its data center in Limburg an der Lahn, in Western Germany.
The PPA is not tied to a specific project, and instead will guarantee OVHcloud with renewable power generated from Enerparc AG – the parent company of Sunnic Lighthouse GmbH – solar portfolio in the country.
“We are pleased to supply OVHcloud with solar power for the long term,” says Arved von Harpe, managing director of Sunnic Lighthouse. “We flexibly adapt our PPAs to our customers’ needs and offer them green power deliveries as they require them. This allows our partner OVHcloud to fully focus on its core business, while we ensure a sustainable and reliable energy supply.”
OVHcloud says that the PPA, which came into effect this year, will support its global goal of reducing its CO2 emissions from data center operations. The company has committed to a 73.4 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 compared to 2022 levels.
According to the company, the PPA increases its renewable energy share to 92 percent.
“The key to this agreement is our goal of using 100 percent low-carbon energy sources by the end of 2025,” said Falk Weinreich, general manager Central Europe at OVHcloud.
OVHcloud opened its Limburg an der Lahn facility in 2017, which was the company’s first data center in Germany. The LIM1 facility has over 2,500 square meters (26,909 sq ft) of IT space.
Founded by Octave Klaba in 1999, OVH currently operates 43 data centers across four continents. Last April, the company launched a new cloud region in France served by three data centers in Paris.
Sunnic offers both corporate PPAs to larger industrial enterprises and Merchant PPAs through an energy trader. The company has a trading portfolio of 4.18GW of installed renewable capacity, which includes 1.1GW of wind power and 3.08GW of solar power.
