Data center firm Edged has launched a new data center in Chicago, Illinois.
The company this week launched the first of three facilities at its 96MW Aurora campus. The two-story ORD01-1 offers 24MW across 210,000 sq ft (19,510 sqm).
Located on 65 acres at 2835 Bilter Road, the site is equipped with a waterless cooling system from Edged’s sister company ThermalWorks. The company said the modular system supports densities of up to 70kW per rack with air cooling and 200kW per rack with plug-and-play liquid cooling integration.
“We are grateful to the City of Aurora for their invaluable partnership and shared vision for a more sustainable future,” said Edged CEO, Bryant Farland. “This state-of-the-art campus exemplifies our mission to drive innovation, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship with every Edged data center. Together, we have transformed an underutilized site into a next-generation IT hub that delivers high-performance computing alongside responsible resource management.”
News of Edged’s plans for the site surfaced in January 2023, and the company broke ground on the site in May 2023. The second phase, the single-story ORD01-2 [which can be split into two facilities], will offer 72MW.
The launch event was attended by Mayor Irvin, City of Aurora officials, leaders from the economic development community, local electric utility provider ComEd, and key project partners.
“The grand opening of Edged marks a significant milestone for Aurora and the greater Chicagoland area,” said Aurora Mayor Richard C. Irvin. “This state-of-the-art high-tech campus not only strengthens our city’s position as a hub for innovation and technology but also brings tremendous economic and employment opportunities to our community.”
Edged Energy is part of Endeavour, which was set up by Aligned founder Jakob Carnemark.
It currently has data centers either operating or in development in Madrid and Barcelona in Spain; Lisbon, Portugal; and across the US, including Missouri, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Iowa, Ohio, and Illinois.
“ComEd is committed to powering impactful economic development projects that create local jobs and drive investment within northern Illinois,” said Melissa Washington, SVP of customer operations and strategic initiatives at ComEd. “The new Edged facility in Aurora is advancing sustainable data center operations to best serve a data-driven future. We look forward to delivering the infrastructure necessary to support Edged operations in Illinois.”
