Estate agents should focus on the outcome rather than the income

As someone who has had a long, and largely successful, career, I have often been asked, particularly by those I may have been mentoring, about the best ways to develop a career, generate money and achieve the stereotypical trappings of success such as a nice house, a fast car, expensive holidays etc.

I have been privileged to enjoy all of those things but money has never been the primary driver of the actions I have taken and I certainly don’t measure success purely by the size of someone’s bank balance.

Yes, I have the nickname Rhino because I have a thick skin and charge a lot but financial success is only ever a by-product of delivering products and services that meet or exceed the needs of clients and where value is the determining factor, not price.

I have quoted on many occasions the words of Zig Ziglar: “You can achieve whatever it is you want in life, if you just help enough other people achieve what they want in life.” Never has a truer statement been made.

I also believe in focusing on the outcome rather than the income as, in my opinion, this brings numerous benefits, both personally and professionally. The delivery of successful outcomes invariably creates win, win scenarios for all parties and the rewards, such as income, follow.

Here are my ten key thoughts on why focusing on the outcome rather than the income should be at the top of our agendas.

1. Increased Job Satisfaction

When we work for the outcome, we are much more likely to find satisfaction in our jobs. This is because we are driven by a sense of purpose and accomplishment rather than just counting the digits on pay day. Achieving relevant, positive goals and seeing the impact of our work, provides a deeper sense of fulfilment that money alone just doesn’t offer.

2. Enhanced Motivation and Engagement

Working towards a meaningful outcome significantly boosts motivation and engagement. When we are passionate about what we do and believe in the value of our work, we are much more likely to put in the effort and stay committed. This intrinsic motivation undoubtedly leads to higher productivity and better performance.

3. Personal Growth and Development

Focusing on outcomes will likely involve setting challenging goals and striving to achieve them. This process will lead to powerful personal growth and development as we push ourselves to learn new skills, overcome obstacles, and improve our abilities. The journey towards achieving these outcomes is a powerful catalyst for self-improvement.

4. Better Relationships and Collaboration

When we prioritise outcomes, we are more likely to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively with others. This is because we are focused on achieving common goals and creating value, rather than simply competing for financial rewards. A collaborative mindset will foster a more positive work environment and lead to better teamwork and communication.

5. Long-Term Success and Sustainability

Working for the outcome will, almost certainly, lead to long-term success and sustainability. When driven by a sense of purpose and a commitment to achieving meaningful goals, we are more likely to make decisions that are in the best interests of our organisation and its stakeholders. This will lead to greater levels of sustainable growth and success over time.

6. Positive Impact on Society

Focusing on outcomes also has a positive impact on our communities and wider society. When we are driven by a desire to create value and make a difference, we are more likely to engage in work that benefits others and contributes to the greater good. This will lead to a more fulfilling and successful career, as well as a positive legacy.

7. Reduced Stress and Burnout

When we work for the outcome, we are less likely to experience stress and burnout. This is because we are driven by the intrinsic motivation and sense of purpose, rather than external pressures and financial incentives. This can lead to a healthier work-life balance and greater overall well-being.

8. Increased Creativity and Innovation

Focusing on meaningful outcomes fosters creativity and innovation. When we are driven by a desire to achieve positive goals, we are more likely to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to problems. This, in turn, leads to innovative ideas and approaches that can drive success and growth.

9. Greater Resilience and Adaptability

Working towards meaningful outcomes also helps develop greater resilience and adaptability. When we are focused on achieving our goals, we are more likely to persevere in the face of challenges and setbacks. This can help us build the resilience and adaptability needed to navigate the ups and downs of our careers.

10. Alignment with Personal Values

Finally, working for the outcome helps us align our work with our personal values. When we are driven by a sense of purpose and are committed to achieving meaningful goals, we are more likely to engage in work that is in line with our values and beliefs. This can lead to a more authentic and fulfilling career.

In conclusion, I hope I have made a strong case for focusing on the outcome rather than just the income.
In reality, it is actually one of those rare scenarios where we can achieve both but I am convinced about which one comes first!
