Nordic SeaFarm and FutureLab & Partners have officially joined forces to launch Manatee Biomaterials, a pioneering venture set to revolutionize biomaterials with ocean-based solutions. Combining Nordic SeaFarm’s expertise in regenerative seaweed cultivation with FutureLab & Partners’ cutting-edge innovation in circular economy technologies, Manatee Biomaterials will develop high-performance, renewable materials for industries seeking sustainable alternatives.
With projects like ALLGEA already in motion alongside Chalmers, Houdini, and Mounid, Manatee Biomaterials is kicking off 2025 with a strong foundation. The company will offer seaweed-based bulk and fraction grades, as well as tailored formulations for plastic replacements, packaging solutions, and furniture components. Open to joint developments and proof-of-concept collaborations, Manatee Biomaterials is poised to accelerate the adoption of ocean-based materials and drive the transition to a more circular and regenerative economy.
Nordic SeaFarm is a Swedish company specializing in large-scale ocean farming of high-value seaweed species. With a strong focus on research and development, the company has participated in multiple EU-funded projects to advance sustainable seaweed cultivation. Managing the entire value chain from spores to finished products, Nordic SeaFarm supplies seaweed for various industries, including food, textiles, animal feed, and biomaterials. Its operations aim to expand the availability of seaweed-based materials while integrating sustainable practices into industrial supply chains.
Nordic SeaFarm brings its expertise in seaweed cultivation while FutureLab & Partners contribute cutting-edge research, innovation and system design in establishing new circular technologies.
“We are thrilled to join forces with FutureLab & Partners to form Manatee Biomaterials,” says Simon Hilmersson, CEO of Nordic SeaFarm. “This partnership allows us to expand the possibilities of our seaweed, positioning us at the forefront of regenerative material solutions. We believe that seaweed-based biomaterials have the potential to transform industries and accelerate the transition to a more regenerative, circular economy.”
FutureLab & Partners focuses on the development and commercialization of sustainable and circular technologies, working across industries, global brands, and funding networks. The company supports early-stage innovations in regenerative materials, low-carbon industrial processes, and circular business models, guiding them from R&D to market adoption. FutureLab & Partners collaborates with industrial players to integrate new technologies into existing supply chains and explores future applications in areas such as packaging, biomaterials, and alternative manufacturing processes. Its portfolio includes projects like Yangi’s dry-forming cellulose, Paboco’s paper bottle technology, and Manatee Biomaterials’ seaweed-based materials.
Liselotte Tingvall from FutureLab & Partners adds, “Our mission is to speed up innovation that creates a positive impact on the planet. With Manatee Biomaterials, we are unlocking the power of the ocean to meet the growing demand for new products in ways that reduce our environmental footprint and support healthy ecosystems. We want to make it easier for the market to adopt ocean based materials into their product portfolios.”
Manatee Biomaterials offers seaweed as a material through bulk grades and fraction grades, as well as tailored formulations and applications together with development partners. We are open for joint developments and proof of concept collaborations related to durable plastic replacements, packaging solutions and furniture parts.
