Amazon has been named the top corporate buyer of renewable energy in the European market.
According to the company, it invested in 46 new renewable projects in countries such as Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, and Finland over the last 12 months.
In 2024, the company invested in 26 standalone renewable projects and 20 on-site projects. These include 17 projects in Spain, 12 in Italy, three in Greece, and two in Finland.
To date, Amazon has invested in more than 230 solar and wind projects across Europe, with an estimated total capacity of 9GW.
“As Europe’s top corporate investor in renewable energy, we will continue to work with governments, industry, and communities to unlock more of Europe’s renewable energy potential,” said Lindsay McQuade, director of energy, EMEA, Amazon.
Iberdrola was Amazon's most prolific renewable energy supplier, signing several Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) across the UK and Iberia. This included its first PPA in Portugal with Iberdrola for energy from the Tâmega Wind Complex, which will be the largest wind farm in Portugal once completed in 2027.
Amazon also signed four PPAs in Greece for three utility-scale wind projects. Two PPAs are tied to the 44.4MW Vermio wind farm, and the other two are linked to the 35.4MW Mesokorfi and 29.5MW Koukouras wind farms.
In addition, in Poland, Amazon agreed to procure 53MW of energy from two wind farms owned by Vortex Energy, the company's first wind power agreement in the country.
Earlier this year, Amazon also claimed the title of the world's biggest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, citing data compiled by BloombergNEF.
According to the company, it has supported more than 600 wind and solar projects to date. Of those 600, around 40 are in countries with high fossil fuel penetration, including Australia, China, Greece, India, Indonesia, Poland, and South Africa, as well as US states such as Louisiana and Mississippi.
