Amazon has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Italian energy firm ERG Group for energy from the 47.3MW Corlacky wind farm in Londonderry County, Northern Ireland.
The PPA is a pay-as-produced agreement in which ERG will supply Amazon with Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) produced by the Corlacky wind farm. According to ERG, the PPA will deliver Amazon 2.5TWh of power over the agreement's term.
The wind farm is in pre-construction and is expected to be completed by Q4 of 2025. Once operational, it will consist of 11 Vestas V117 turbines and produce an estimated 176GWh annually.
Commenting on the PPA, Paolo Merli, CEO of ERG, said: "This important contract with a global player confirms ERG’s leadership role in the PPA market," and described PPAs as "fundamental tools for stabilizing revenues in a volatile price scenario."
Merli added: “Thanks to this further agreement, the energy secured by the Group through PPAs exceeds 3TWh per year.”
REGOs (known as Renewable Energy Credits in the US) are certificates issued to accredited renewable generators for every MWh of electricity they produce over a year. REGOs have been criticized as a low-quality form of renewable energy investment because there is no guarantee that renewable energy was consumed or that new renewable energy capacity was built to match the demand.
Further details on the agreement were not shared.
This is Amazon's third PPA announcement in 2025. Earlier this week, it inked three PPAs with Iberdrola across Spain and Portugal for 476MW of power. The three projects are expected to supply Amazon with 1,093GWh per year.
Last month, Amazon signed two PPAs in Japan with EDP Renewables and X-Elio. In the first deal, Amazon signed a 20-year agreement to buy power from an EDP-owned 44MW solar farm in Fukushima. In its PPA with X-Elio, it agreed to purchase the full capacity of a 14MW solar plant in Ube, southern Japan, over a 20-year term.
PPAs are a central tenant of Amazon's power procurement strategy. Last month, it claimed the title of the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy for the fifth consecutive year, citing data compiled by BloombergNEF.
