The site of a former BT data center in Glasgow, Scotland, is set to be redeveloped.
Final plans have been submitted for the project which will see the land at 145 Elliot Street redeveloped for a "residential-led mixed-use development."
The planning statement reads that the plot forms "part of Lancefield Quay and comprises vacant brownfield land which was previously used as a BT data center. The data center building has recently been demolished."
Applicant Telereal General Property GP Limited (part of TT Group) aims to develop up to 300 residential units, 430 student accommodation rooms, 300 co-living units, and 250 sqm (2,690 sq ft) of commercial space on the site.
The final plans come after a long period of community consultation.
As reported by Insider.co.uk, Sam Rosenkranz – senior development manager at TT Group – stated: “Through the delivery of quality accommodation, carefully thought-out public realm spaces, and commercial units, we remain confident that the proposals will enhance this area of Glasgow, which is currently undergoing significant transformative change, whilst also serving to address the shortage of purpose-built student accommodation for the city’s thriving student population.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the local community and interested parties who have engaged with us throughout the consultation process and provided us with their valuable feedback.”
Elliot Street Consultation describes the property as currently being home to an "unappealing data center building" which is "currently undergoing demolition, and offers little value to the area."
Little information about BT Group's time at the site is publicly available. DCD has contacted the UK telco to find out how long the company was operating in the facility, and what prompted an exit.
BT Group is underway with a strategy to transition away from owning and operating data centers, towards partnering with globally scaled organizations. The company announced at the end of last year that it was selling its Irish data center business to Equinix, which included two operational data centers in CityWest and Ballycoolin, Dublin.
Glasgow – and Scotland as a whole – does not have a major data center market. DataCenterMap lists 11 data centers in the whole country, four of which are in Glasgow. Operators include Daisy Communications, iomart hosting, and DataVita.
Despite this, the Scottish government has long been trying to promote the country as a data center location. A report compiled by Host in Scotland, in support of the Scottish Government, lists 20 potential data center sites in the country, also noting the climate benefits and availability of power.
