Lund-based Innoscentia has secured €500,000 from long-term angel investors in Skåne to accelerate the commercialization of its smart food label technology. The startup, founded in 2015, has developed a reactive ink label that detects bacterial growth in real time, providing a dynamic alternative to static expiration dates. With a total of €2.2 million raised to date, Innoscentia plans to scale production, expand partnerships with retailers and food producers, and transition from R&D to full-scale market deployment. The company is already working with Knäreds Kyckling on a pilot project and has launched an analytical tool to complement its core offering.

Innoscentia is at the forefront of transforming food labeling by introducing dynamic shelf-life indicators that provide real-time freshness updates. Their patented reactive ink technology detects spoilage gases within packaging, offering both visual cues for consumers and digital tracking for blockchain-integrated supply chains.

“Our sensors react to specific gases produced during spoilage. As food starts to degrade, certain compounds are released, and our technology detects these changes,” says Erik Månsson, CEO of Innoscentia to Impact Loop.

The global food industry struggles with static expiration dates, leading to premature disposal of edible products. Innoscentia’s approach challenges this norm by:

Enhancing supply chain efficiency with microbiological and sensory testing.
Reducing food waste without compromising quality.

Their Shelf Life Analysis service combines microbial predictive modeling and sensory testing, providing cost-effective and data-driven insights to optimize food production and distribution.

As spoilage bacteria grow, they release gases that trigger a reaction in Innoscentia’s bio-sensor label, changing color based on freshness levels. This real-time status update eliminates guesswork, reducing returns and waste while increasing consumer trust.

The startup also integrates its solution into a digital platform, enabling scannable labels that provide deeper insights into product origins, producer data, and quality analytics.

By unlocking lost shelf life, Innoscentia is reshaping the food industry, making it smarter, more sustainable, and waste-free—one label at a time.
