Oslo-based startup Avisomo has raised €5 million to further develop its automated vertical farming technology. The funding consists of a €1.6 million grant from Innovation Norway and €3.4 million from existing investors. Founded in 2018, the company designs modular indoor farming systems that require minimal manual intervention and can be integrated into supply chains. The investment will support the completion of Avisomo’s industrial pilot with Coop, expected to begin operations in 2025, with a projected annual output of 100 tons of lettuce. The initiative aims to improve local food production and reduce dependence on imports
Avisomo is a Norwegian AgriTech startup specializing in automated vertical farming solutions designed for large-scale food supply chains. The company’s Frøy Growth System, named after the Norse god of fertility, integrates Industry 4.0 principles to enable cost-efficient, year-round production of fresh produce with minimal human intervention. Avisomo is currently developing one of the most advanced automated vertical farms in collaboration with Coop, Norway’s second-largest retail chain, at its Gardermoen distribution center, set to become operational in early 2025. With a focus on scalability and supply chain integration, Avisomo aims to improve food security and sustainability by reducing dependency on imports and minimizing food waste.
“Our technology is designed to integrate smoothly into existing supply chains, eliminating the need for local expertise in cultivation, chemistry, or technical operations. This allows our customers to grow fresh food locally year-round, with minimal resource use, extended shelf life, and without the environmental impact of transportation,” says Martin Molenaar, CEO and Co-founder of Avisomo to EU-Startups.
“Innovation Norway has supported Avisomo on several occasions, and the company has demonstrated impressive execution capabilities in previous projects,” says Sverre H. Bjørnstad, Director of Innovation Norway Innlandet. “The company is now in a growth phase, focusing on technology development for a fully automated facility for vertical hydroponic cultivation of plants. This advanced method of soil-less cultivation has the potential to strengthen Norway’s self-sufficiency in food production. At Innovation Norway, we have assessed the project as both groundbreaking and innovative, and deem it to address some of the global challenges in food production. In light of this, we also see significant export potential for the company. We look forward to following their continued development.”
