Geneva-based IT firm Infomaniak has launched a data center in Geneva, Switzerland.

First reported by Radio Television Suisse, the data center is located in the basement of the Bistoquetter housing cooperative district and is solely powered by renewable energy, including hydroelectric energy.

The company said its data center feeds into a district heating network, capable of heating up to 6,000 homes.

Details and specifications of the data center have not been provided. DCD has reached out to Infomaniak for further information.

“These are tens of thousands of servers that operate day and night, summer and winter. These servers consume a lot of electricity. By 2026, this will represent the equivalent of Japan’s consumption,” said Thomas Jacobsen, a spokesperson for Informaniak.

“All this electricity is wasted in the atmosphere.”

To mitigate the wasted electricity, the company has removed all air conditioning from its data centers to improve energy efficiency. The alternative cooling method used has not been shared.

According to Datacenter Map, Infomaniak already operates two data centers, both in Geneva. It is not clear whether the new facility is included in this number. According to the company website, its facility launched in 2014 also runs on 100 percent renewable energy.

On its website, the company said it employs more than 200 employees to provide public administrations, businesses, and individuals with cloud hosting, streaming, marketing, and event management solutions.

Currently, Stack, nLighten, Swisscom, and Equinix have a presence in Geneva. The majority of data centers in Switzerland are located in Zurich.
