London-based Synthesia, a startup focused on enterprise AI-powered video communications, has closed a €174 million Series D funding round, bringing its valuation to a whopping €2 billion, making it the UK’s most valuable Gen-AI media company.

Led by NEA, the round also saw participation from new investors WiL (World Innovation Lab), Atlassian Ventures, and PSP Growth, alongside existing backers GV, MMC Ventures, and FirstMark. This funding brings Synthesia’s total capital raised to over €320 million.

“This new investment will help us develop a new generation of AI-powered video experiences that are interactive, real-time, and personalised, offering possibilities we could have only imagined when we founded the company in 2017. I’m excited to bring these experiences to our over 60,000 customers, which range from the world’s largest brands to thousands of small businesses that use Synthesia to communicate internally and externally with unmatched engagement and efficiency,” said Victor Riparbelli, CEO and Co-founder of Synthesia.

Synthesia was founded in 2017 by a team of AI researchers and entrepreneurs from UCL, Stanford, TUM and Cambridge: Victor Riparbelli, Steffen Tjerrild, Prof. Matt Niessner, and Prof. Lourdes Agapito.

Synthesia develops AI-driven tools that allows businesses to produce high-quality, scalable video content efficiently. Its customer base, which includes over 60% of Fortune 100 companies, uses the platform for internal communications, training, and external engagement.

With more than 60,000 customers globally, the company plans to use the new funds to fuel product innovation, expand its team, and increase its presence in key markets such as North America, Europe, Japan, and Australia.

“NEA has a long history of supporting transformative companies, and we’re excited to partner with Synthesia as they shape the future of AI-powered communication,” said Philip Chopin, Managing Director, NEA UK. “We believe Synthesia’s commitment to enterprise-grade solutions and its impressive traction with customers – 60% of Fortune 100 companies are Synthesia customers – sets the company apart in a rapidly evolving market.”

Synthesia also announced the appointment of Peter Hill as Chief Technology Officer. Hill has held senior roles at Amazon and Wildfire Studios. His contribution will be critical as Synthesia continues to develop Synthesia 2.0, its next-generation enterprise AI video platform.

The new platform aims to transform video production, featuring tools such as personal AI avatars, AI screen recording, and multilingual dubbing. Synthesia’s innovations allow businesses to create and distribute tailored, localised video content at scale, a capability that is reshaping communication strategies for companies like SAP, Korn Ferry, Inter IKEA Group, and Siemens.

“Synthesia has become a valuable component of Siemens’ digital communication and video production strategy. Its advanced platform, featuring speech-to-video transformation, multilingual support, digital avatar creation, and seamless brand integration, has optimized our content creation processes. These capabilities have enhanced our efficiency while elevating our ability to deliver high-quality, localized content with speed and precision, enabling impactful communication across our global organization,” commented Sven Windsch, Head of Technology Adoption at Siemens.

Synthesia recently became the first AI video company to achieve ISO 42001 certification, a benchmark for security compliance in generative AI. The company also recently conducted a public red team test of its platform in collaboration with NIST.

With a growing team of over 400 employees across offices in London, New York, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Zurich, and Munich, Synthesia is well-positioned to lead the next wave of AI-driven media innovation.
