Computer hardware manufacturer Raspberry Pi has launched a carbon removal credit system, offering customers the option to mitigate the carbon footprint of their computers' manufacture, shipping, and disposal.
The Raspberry Pi Carbon Removal Credit will use offsets based on UK carbon removal firm Undo's enhanced rock weathering (ERW) technology. According to the company, they are $4 per credit and can be purchased on the Raspberry Pi website.
Raspberry Pi claims that purchasing one of its carbon removal credits will support the removal of 6.5kg of CO2 from the atmosphere.
ERW is a carbon removal technique that accelerates the natural process of rock weathering. It works by grinding silicate rocks, like basalt, into fine particles and spreading them over land. This increases the surface area of the rocks, which speeds up chemical reactions between them, water, and air. Academic studies suggest ERW can potentially remove between six and 30Mt of CO2 annually.
Undo was formed in 2022. Its initial operations are focused in the north of England and Scotland. According to Undo, the company uses crushed basalt as a by-product, which means no additional energy is required to procure it. As a result, Undo claims that its operations deliver a 95 percent carbon efficiency for basalt.
The company is involved throughout the value chain and focuses on entering long-term partnerships with quarry, haulage, and agricultural companies, providing a consistent revenue stream back to agricultural communities.
In September, Undo signed a follow-on deal with Microsoft to remove 15,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere by spreading 25,000 tonnes of basalt in the UK.
ERW has become a popular form of carbon removal over recent years. In December, Google signed a long-term purchase agreement and made a direct equity investment with Terradot, a carbon removal startup, to help scale its ERW technology.
As part of the agreement, Google will purchase 200,000 tons of carbon removal credits, which will be delivered in the early 2030s. This represents the largest ERW carbon removal deal to date.
