Blykalla, a Stockholm-based developer of liquid lead-cooled small modular reactors (SMRs), has partnered with KSB, a manufacturer of pumps and valves for nuclear applications, to co-develop specialized pumps for the SEALER reactor. These pumps, crucial for the reactor’s functionality and cost-efficiency, will be designed to withstand the demanding conditions of liquid lead environments. The collaboration aims to address technical challenges in advanced nuclear technology and strengthen the supply chain for clean energy solutions.
Blykalla specializes in the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) that use liquid lead cooling technology. Its work focuses on creating advanced nuclear energy solutions designed to provide reliable baseload power with enhanced safety features. The company collaborates with industry partners to advance the development of its SEALER reactor, aiming to contribute to clean energy transitions and meet future energy demands.
KSB is an international engineering company that designs and manufactures pumps, valves, and related systems for industrial, energy, and water applications. With decades of experience in nuclear power, KSB provides components for critical systems such as primary and secondary circuits, as well as auxiliary operations. The company is known for its technical expertise in addressing complex engineering requirements in demanding environments.
Under the collaboration, Blykalla and KSB will design, develop, and manufacture pumps capable of operating in liquid lead environments. Pumps are one of the most critical components in a liquid lead-cooled reactor, as their operational lifetime impacts the reactor’s overall need for maintenance and hence cost-effectiveness.
“We are very pleased to work with KSB, a global leader in their field, whose expertise and innovation will play a role in the development of our reactor systems,” says Jacob Stedman, CEO of Blykalla. “This collaboration is an important milestone as we continue to advance our mission of building Europe’s first advanced SMR.”
KSB’s extensive experience in providing high-performance pump systems for challenging applications ensures that the components will meet the specific demands of liquid lead-cooled environments.
“We are delighted to partner with Blykalla on this groundbreaking project. Our know-how based on experience out of decades in the nuclear industry and the knowledge in high-temperature equipment is a perfect match for the innovative SEALER technology. This collaboration is a significant step towards our vision of supporting a CO2-free energy generation, enhancing safety standards, and contributing to a sustainable future,” says Mr. Andreas Hefter, Vice President Nuclear Energy at KSB.
This partnership underlines Blykalla’s commitment to working with leading global industrial companies to develop the SEALER, and represents a major step in the journey toward delivering reliable, advanced SMRs for the future energy market.
