Clyde Hydrogen Systems, a spin-out from the University of Glasgow, has launched a €6 million seed funding round to propel the commercialisation of its hydrogen production technology.

This funding will allow the company to refine its decoupled electrolysis process, develop a production-ready system by 2026, and expand its team to meet the rising demand for efficient and scalable hydrogen solutions.

The funding round builds on pre-seed investments from Zinc and the University of Glasgow, along with grants from the Scottish Government’s Hydrogen Innovation Scheme and the Net Zero Technology Centre.

With these resources, Clyde Hydrogen aims to transform its breakthrough research into market-ready technology, solidifying its position at the forefront of renewable hydrogen production.

James Peck, CEO of Clyde Hydrogen, emphasised the importance of the funding round: “This technical milestone validates years of dedicated research and development. It demonstrates our ability to scale lab-based innovations into commercially viable technology. With this funding round, we aim to propel Clyde Hydrogen towards delivering a production-ready system and playing a key role in the UK’s renewable energy future.”

Developed at the University of Glasgow’s School of Chemistry, Clyde Hydrogen’s decoupled electrolysis process involves an electrochemical reductor that creates a reduced mediator solution and a catalytic hydrogen generator that produces high-pressure hydrogen gas.

Clyde Hydrogen’s technology, which is designed to convert low-quality, intermittent renewable power into clean hydrogen, offers improved efficiency and safety over conventional systems, making it a vital tool for enabling the global transition to net-zero energy systems.

The company’s proprietary technology achieved a major milestone with the successful production of hydrogen at pressures exceeding 100 bar, using its scaled-up catalytic hydrogen generator. This high-pressure production is a critical technical validation, showcasing Clyde Hydrogen’s ability to address one of the most pressing challenges in renewable energy: matching intermittent power sources with efficient hydrogen production.

With plans to deliver a fully integrated pilot system by late 2025 and a commercial demonstrator by 2027, Clyde Hydrogen’s €6 million funding round represents opens the door to scale up its operations.
