Oslo-based startup Atlas.co has raised $2 million in a pre-seed round led by Pale Blue Dot, a European VC with a climate focus, joined by notable investors including Ben Lang, formerly of Notion, and Andreas Klinger, a founding team member at Product Hunt. Atlas.co offers a browser-based, collaborative mapping tool designed to simplify geospatial data analysis for industries such as renewable energy, urban planning, and real estate. With this new funding, Atlas.co plans to expand its engineering team and accelerate product development, enhancing its platform’s features to provide even more accessible and powerful GIS tools tailored to climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure needs.

Atlas.co is setting a new standard in geospatial data accessibility with its freemium, browser-based mapping platform. Created to simplify geographic information system (GIS) technology, Atlas.co’s tool enables users to develop interactive, data-rich maps directly from their browser, eliminating the need for high-performance hardware and costly legacy software. This approach brings powerful mapping capabilities to users across various industries, from renewable energy and urban planning to real estate and journalism.

Founded in 2021 by a team of Norwegian engineers, Atlas.co was inspired by the barriers many face with traditional GIS software. Recognizing that current solutions often require significant computing power and substantial costs, Atlas.co’s team developed a lightweight, cloud-based alternative that opens the door to geospatial data visualization for users across sectors, including renewable energy, urban planning, real estate, and media. This approach empowers teams to layer, analyze, and present spatial data in ways that were previously challenging to achieve without extensive training or high-end technology.

Atlas.co’s features include real-time collaboration tools, interactive dashboards, and data layering options, allowing users to build and analyze custom maps with ease. Users can visualize everything from population density to renewable resource data, leveraging advanced spatial analysis capabilities typically reserved for expert users of traditional GIS tools.

The platform recently garnered significant attention, attracting close to 20,000 users from over 140 countries since its initial launch. To build on this momentum, Atlas.co secured $2 million in pre-seed funding led by the climate-focused European VC firm Pale Blue Dot, with support from industry veterans like Ben Lang, previously of Notion, and Andreas Klinger, a founding member of Product Hunt. “Atlas.co represents a meaningful step toward leveraging spatial data for real-world impact, including in critical areas like climate action,” said Joel Larsson, partner at Pale Blue Dot.

With fresh funding, Atlas.co plans to scale its engineering team and continue expanding its features to make GIS technology more user-friendly. Moger believes this platform will be invaluable as industries increasingly rely on geospatial data to address urgent challenges, especially those related to climate change and sustainability.

In a world where data-driven insights are crucial, Atlas.co is redefining how organizations can visualize and leverage geospatial data to drive social and environmental impact.
