Swedish defence technology startup, Nordic Air Defence secures a €1.2 million investment aimed at advancing its mission to bolster European resilience and autonomy through supply chain-independent drone defence solutions. The funding round, led by Norway’s SNÖ Ventures, marks the firm’s first foray into the defence tech sector and represents the second close of a larger strategic investment round. The funds will be directed toward research and development (R&D) and airborne testing, with the company planning a full seed round in the future.

The investment round attracted several notable private investors who will also join Nordic Air Defence’s board. These include Jörgen Bladh, co-founder of Northzone, and Jan Gurander, former Deputy CEO and CFO of Volvo Group, known for his experience in defence businesses. The round also saw participation from Noam Perski, who will serve as a strategic advisor, and existing board members, such as Chairman Johan Ahlberg and co-founder Gustav Wiberg, reaffirmed their commitment to the company with additional investments.

Nordic Air Defence, which recently emerged from stealth mode in September 2024, launched its flagship product, the Kreuger 100—a dual-use drone interceptor designed for civil and military applications. The Kreuger 100 platform replaces conventional hardware with software-driven technology, making it more cost-effective and allowing for large-scale manufacturing. Powered by batteries and engineered for portability, the Kreuger 100 offers a streamlined, scalable solution for customers aiming to bolster their drone defence capabilities.

Karl Rosander, CEO and founder of Nordic Air Defence stated: “In the weeks since we emerged from stealth mode, the enthusiasm for our product has allowed us to close a strategic round and secure the support of a group of world-class innovators and sector experts: a significant achievement for a company at our early stage. This investment will accelerate Nordic Air Defence’s development as a business in terms of development and staffing, and help bring the Kreuger 100 to the market faster. Great news for Nordic Air Defence, but also for those who appreciate that a new kind of European defence tech ecosystem needs to be kickstarted.”

NAD-2

Nordic Air Defence aims to reduce European reliance on international supply chains, particularly from the United States, by developing technology within Europe. As modern drone warfare evolves, the company is committed to innovating beyond traditional jamming and kinetic solutions, which it describes as increasingly outdated against new threats. Future expansion plans include diversifying into defence technologies for land, sea, and subsea domains, as well as expanding into global markets.

Rosander expressed urgency around rethinking European defence tech, drawing parallels with the rapid innovation seen during the COVID-19 vaccine development process: “The global defence tech sector has become oligarchical and slow-moving, and is ripe for disruption. The urgency around the need to create COVID vaccines, which necessitated rapid public sector and private collaboration and innovation, breaking established rules, must be applied to European defence tech. Nordic Air Defence is here to change the paradigm.”
