Global law firm White & Case LLP has advised Sir Paul Marshall and Old Queen Street Ventures (OQS Media) on their acquisition of The Spectator magazine.
The Spectator is an iconic British media brand focusing on politics, culture, and current affairs. The acquisition will provide The Spectator with access to the investment, expertise and facilities to grow as part of the wider OQS Media portfolio. A particular focus will be given to expanding the magazine’s reach in the Anglosphere and in North America, as well as using OQS Media’s digital expertise to enhance the experience of Spectator readers by innovating across technology, video and audio.
Alongside The Spectator, renowned international art magazine Apollo will also join the OQS Media portfolio. Founded in London in 1925 and published monthly, Apollo is one of the world’s oldest and most respected magazines on visual arts.
OQS Media, which is owned by British entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir Paul Marshall, also owns and operates the online magazine UnHerd, the Old Queen Street Café, the UnHerd Club and CoEditor Limited, a publishing technology startup.
The acquisition follows a receivership process undertaken last year by Lloyds Banking Group and the acquisition of a call option over the assets by RedBird IMI.
The White & Case team which advised on the transaction was led by partners Di Yu, Colin Harley and Marc Israel (all London) and included partners David Lewis, Alex Woodfield, Jessica Kemp, Philip Trillmich, Nicholas Greenacre, Christian Pilkington, Jonah Anderson, Charles Balmain, Swati Tripathi (all London), Kimberly Petillo-Decossard (New York) and Linda Sim (Los Angeles) and associates Lily Simmonds, Conor Magee, Jacob Heath, Victoria North, George Croft, Claire Slunecko, Esme Wong, Mhairi Fraser, Kate Kelliher, Prisca Victoria Wharton (all London), Cristen Callan, Allieana Bao and Nashel Jung (all New York).
