Stockholm-based EcoDataCenter has partnered with CoreWeave to construct Europe’s first large-scale NVIDIA Blackwell AI cluster in Falun, Sweden. CoreWeave, a cloud-based computing powerhouse, is expanding its footprint in Europe with this collaboration, which will substantially increase the continent’s AI computing capacity. EcoDataCenter, renowned for its sustainable data centers powered by renewable energy, will house thousands of Blackwell GPUs, interconnected via NVIDIA’s ultra-fast Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a cornerstone in meeting the rising demand for AI services across Europe, marking a significant leap in sustainable AI infrastructure.
Generative AI has rapidly transformed several industries. NVIDIA, the world leader in processors for AI services, launched the AI platform Blackwell in the spring of 2024. Compared to its predecessor, the platform is estimated to offer significantly higher AI training performance while being 25 times more energy efficient. In practice, this enables new and more efficient AI applications for companies and organizations.
Now, CoreWeave and EcoDataCenter are bringing the latest AI technology to Sweden. In Falun, a cluster consisting of thousands of Blackwell GPUs, all interconnected with ultra-fast NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBandnetworking, will be installed in EcoDataCenter’s facilities. The installation will begin in early 2025, which will be a significant milestone for the expansion of European AI infrastructure.
“One of Europe’s most powerful AI computers will be built in Falun. This partnership with CoreWeave is a testament that our focus on sustainability and technological leadership makes us the leading AI factory in Europe. I am proud that we are laying the foundation for both Swedish and European AI infrastructure,” says Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter.
“Demand for high-performance computing is at an all-time high from European AI labs and enterprises,” said Jaap Zuiderveld, Vice President of EMEA at NVIDIA. “CoreWeave and EcoDataCenter’s deployment of NVIDIA Blackwell technology across Europe will help boost compute capacity and deliver sustainable data center solutions for the region.”
Since its start in 2014, EcoDataCenter has established itself as a leader in sustainable data centers. The facilities are built with wood to minimize the CO2 footprint, something unique to EcoDataCenter worldwide. Additionally, they are powered by 100 percent renewable electricity, and the excess heat from the data center in Falun is reused in pellet production. Approximately 90 percent of the workforce at EcoDataCenter is local, currently consisting of 350 construction workers completing the data center.
“That CoreWeave chooses to establish itself here not only speaks to the quality of EcoDataCenter’s operations, but also shows that Falun is a good municipality for companies to operate in and collaborate with, which makes me both happy and proud. Being part of creating the conditions for how the future will develop is very exciting – and one must also not forget that with each new data center, new job opportunities follow in Falun,” says Liza Lundberg (S), Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board in Falun.
The collaboration with EcoDataCenter is part of CoreWeave’s European expansion, supported by a total investment of $2.2 billion USD. In addition to the establishment in Falun, CoreWeave will also establish data centers in Norway and Spain.
“This establishment will enable us to support the growing demand for AI services in Europe and provide our customers with unparalleled computing power and efficiency. This is a crucial step in our European expansion, where EcoDataCenter’s sustainable and advanced technology is central to our success,” says Mike Mattacola, Chief Business Officer at CoreWeave.
